About the Author

Adam and Rob are the brains behind Magic Spongers, a football blog they created in 2010 and, despite universal concurrence that the age of the blog is dead, they are still running. Under this and other guises including their own names, they have contributed articles to When Saturday Comes, In Bed with Maradona and Run of Play, among others. You can find the blog at www.magicspongers.blogspot.com and some tweets @magicspongers. This is their first book as joint editors.

I really enjoyed this book, which took me back to my own childhood and my first match. It's a treat for any footy fan and reminded me why I fell in love with the game in the first place. Must read!

This book is a selection of brief reflections describing how their writers first fell in love with football. Unfortunately the quality of writing and editing is very uneven. Many of the writers are much the same age, so there is some duplication in the chapters. In fact the book would lose nothing if chapters describing matches in Italia 90 and USA 94 were cut. The chapter on Juventus would be rejected by Pseuds Corner in Private Eye. The one on Hearts offers about as much information as a Wiki entry.
A shorter book would be much better. There are some well written satisfying nuggets amongst the more similar, repetitive, chapters. Pieces on Plymouth, Linfield and Queen of the South are informative, charming and well written, offering the reader genuine interest and insight. The one on Lewes by Stuart Fuller provides a thoughtful quirky story about how he fell out of love with the Premier League and found joy supporting a non-league club. The chapter on Chester City is well crafted and truly moving.
This book is for the ardent footie freak, rather than the casual sports fan.

This is a true fans perspective on what being a football supporter is all about. Featuring so many great writers, and their experiences, it's a real joy of a book and a must read for any football fan. If you're ever stuck for a Father's Day present you can't go wrong with Falling For Football!

It gives the feeling of sitting in the pub with your mates, telling stories over a pint. If your mates were all really interesting and terribly eloquent.
