Forced to flee for his life Charlie is reluctantly joined by George, a maintenance man and George s girlfriend Tina The trio find themselves falling into a world that they are ill equipped to deal with. 5.0 out of 5 stars I've fallen for Falling 25 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
Falling kept me turning pages into the wee small hours.

The author tells the tale through the eyes of the different characters, so each chapter adds new detail and perspective to the emerging story. Characters range from the hapless bystander in the wrong place at the wrong time, to the master villians behind the scheme; each developed with pace and quiet humour. I will be very wary of mild-mannered janitor types from now on.

Based in Glasgow, but no extensive city knowledge required to follow the moves.

Pre-booking the next novel now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rashomon comes to Glasgow 18 July 2009
Format:Paperback
What I really like about this book is the way it is narrated entirely by the characters. Often successive chapters describe the same event from different points of view, without any overarching authorial perspective. This technique is very successful in keeping the story moving right up to its thrilling end.

The characters speak colloquially, but not in a deep enough dialect to make them unintelligible to a non-Glaswegian. Perhaps more could have been done to differentiate the language of one type of character from another - but this is a minor quibble.

I might add that the book is unusually well produced for a thriller, with a beautifully clear typeface and generous margins. Congratulations to the publisher as well as to the author! The Fledgling Press has definitely spread its wings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Falling - Gordon Brown 4 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I thought the pace was excellent right from the start, gets you drawn in, turning the page, wanting to find out more about the characters and the plot.

The two main characters are sympathetic, people will associate with them being out their depth, trying their best, and also probably looking for a bit of a thrill away from the mundane of their day to day lives. George stands out the most, as the character who is most out his depth but responds the best. Tina too is out her depth, but has the intelligence to respond.

The shady businessmen are suitably untrustworthy, and didn't necessarily believe what they were saying, or their actions. Did Karen actually fancy Simon or was it just to throw him off the scent? For a hardman, Simon seemed quite vulnerable and was probably the most sympathetic out of the three. The Gorillas, well number 2 was something else.

Good use of the Glasgow landscape, as someone who comes from the city but no longer lives there, it brought back some vivid memories.

A well paced, page turning, glasgow thriller. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Dead Brilliant! 8 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I wouldn't normally be moved to leave a review after reading a book but I wanted to make this an exception. I had the pleasure of meeting the author in East Kilbride after stumbling upon his book launch. A very nice guy with an interesting background. I do hope we have many more of his books to read.

I very much enjoyed the different perspectives through which the story unfolded. It's like an old over head projector trick where acetates are progressively superimposed to reveal the full picture. I loved George and Tina. A real pair of Restless Natives!

The paperback is of exceptional quality. Too good to be read at the poolside with sun cream fingers.

A very well earned five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tarantino has competition with this one.... 13 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
A brilliant debut novel written in short sharp chapters which, if you're like me, makes the book easy to read in bite size chunks but I can guarantee that before you get halfway through you won't want to put it down. Written from the perspective of three groups as the book unfolds it follows the antics of the good guys, unwittingly drawn in to a web of intrigue, murder, corruption and house breaking, the hapless thugs sent to find them and the perpetrators of the crime trying desperately to stay out of jail. This is undoubtedly the best crime thriller I've ever read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tartan Noir par excellence 15 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
Charlie seems destined to die, either by falling or from a thousand cuts. He turns up in chapter after chapter, oozing blood from yet more wounds. People are out to get him, though it takes a while to find out why. MPs' expenses pale into insignificance compared to the activities of certain characters in this book. Events happen around various parts of Glasgow, both seamy and salubrious. Denise Mina has been here before, but she writes from the viewpoint of a journalist and the polis. In Gordon Brown's book the `good' people avoid the polis, mostly, unless they think they (the polis) can be of help. Even the best people have something to hide. Most of the characters are incompetent, often hilariously so. You might like George and Tina, despite their shortcomings. The others get their just deserts. The chapters come in small readable chunks, and it is hard to put the book down. Definitely a good example of Tartan Noir.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read 13 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Was introduced to this author by a mate of mine. This really is a page turner, a book you just don't want to put down.

Hooked from the very first page, no three to four chapters before the book starts to get interesting.

I'm off to read Gordon Brown's next book, 59 minutes and hopefully by the time I've finished it he has written and published his third novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Falling 10 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Fast moving original thriller. Interesting technique of writing in the first person from the point of view of a number of the characters.
