Product Description

CD Description

Performers of Medieval Chant - Arabic-Byzantine Chant/Hildegard von Bingen/Codex Las Huelgas (with Osnabrücker Jugendchor - director Johannes Rahe) This CD presents early Christian chant composed and interpreted by women. The songs range from the Arabic-christian tradition of Syria and Lebanon in the first centuries after Christ to the rather unknown compositians by Kassia of Byzantium to those of Hildegard von Bingen and music from the chloister Las Huelgas in northern Spain.

Format:Audio CD
If early church chants from the now defunct Byzantine Empire and the Western Church is your thing or just the fact that it is nothing but women composers then this CD is an absolute must. The works combine the traditions of the Eastern church with the Greek scales and Middle Eastern Maqams as well as the early Medieval Western Church. It is some of the most ravashing music you will ever hear, especially the aurally and melodically stunning tracks by the earliest known Byzantine composer, those of Kassia from the 9th Century Byzantine Empires zelous convents. The meditations are amazingly performed and even the now well known Hildegard Von Bingen pieces are given new emphasis and poigniancy when explored in the light of the Byzantine based works. I cannot recommend this CD enough, don't hesitate about buying it, just buy it! You really will not regret it.
