I liked the first two books in Ruckley's Godless World setting. The concept of a world abandoned by the Gods isn't exactly new, but combined with the pseudo-Norse winter setting, gritty and realistic writing and a high mortality rate amongst the main characters it seemed to be building nicely to a conclusion.

I felt that Fall of Thanes pushed on relentlessly but with no real pace. Events grind on to an all too inevitable conclusion, like a Greek tragedy on ice. The ending is telegraphed from the first few pages and I had no sense of involvement, finding myself skipping paragraphs at a time to get to something worthwhile - because there are only so many times you can read about how the hero is being chased through a wintry forest by Kyrinin. Again.

I am sure Ruckley can do better than this, but I am not sure that I would want to return his Godless world settign again unless any further book are radically different. A disappointing end to a series that promised more.

Bleak 22 Jun 2011

This series started very well and introduced some intriguing characters. The books are well written although each is a little long and trimming down would have improved the pacing but the main criticism is that the series really degenerates into a most depressing and bleak affair. The final book in particular is more a war of attrition for the reader than anything else and is very hard going. It finishes surprisingly quickly in the end - I got the distinct feeling the author had reached the end of his tether and just couldn't take any more, and to be frank so had I. Ever so glad it was all over.

I am a huge fan of this type of novel and the Winterbirth trilogy has proved a winner with me. The last time I enjoyed a trilogy so much was Joe Abercrombie's "The First Law". Although Mr Ruckleys story doesn't have the touch of humour present in Mr Abercrombie's, I did find I cared for the characters and even found myself rooting for one of the "bad" guys towards the end.
So if you like your stories quite grim and dark with lots of bloody battles, then give this set of books a read. You won't be disappointed.
