A Great Ballad Accompanied By A Ripping Cover. 13 Dec 2004
By Michael Kropotkin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
By now it should be known by all that Velvet Revolver, the ultimate fusion of Guns N' Roses with Stone Temple Pilots, is no failure and they have conquered the current American rock scene. If anything they prove veterans can still rock harder and meaner than any new Punk band. Their first single of their debut "Contraband," "Slither," was a crawling, almost tribal jam with Scott Weiland evoking to Slash's sonic assault. But now we have "Fall To Pieces," the single that proves the guys also have heart. It's a lovely power ballad with some great melodies coming off the strings and Weiland not sounding fake but like an authentic frontman letting out some angst. Slash's solo is an intricate example of the days when real metal trotted the Earth. The song slowly builds up to a stunning climax with both passion and fury. One of the treats here is a cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender," the band breathes life into the song with ferocious energy and style. The chorus soars and it's simply a great cover of an already great song. And of course there's the video for "Fall To Pieces" which is gritty and almost disturbing, showcasing the realities of Weiland's more insane, drug-binging days. A strong video for a strong song. For those interested I suggest to purchase their entire debut, for those who only enjoyed this little tune this is the CD to get.
