Book Description

The 14th novel in the charming Daisy Dalrymple series of 1920's country house murder mysteries.

Product Description

For Daisy and her husband Alec, a long-awaited break by the sea becomes a busman's holiday when a local ladies' man turns up murdered on the beach... Yet in the coastal town of Westcombe it's hard to find someone who wouldn't have wanted George Enderby dead. The married Casanova's scandalous seductions had earned him the enmity of every jilted lover and cuckolded husband in the area - not to mention the resentment of his long-suffering wife. And now, as Daisy and Alec investigate among the seaside cliffs, beautiful beach and quaint village, this holiday idyll seems nothing more than a sinister backdrop for cold blooded murder... while the murderer may be closer than Daisy thinks! Praise for the Daisy Dalrymple series: 'Cunning... appropriate historical detail and witty dialogue are the finishing touches on this engaging 1920s period piece.' Publishers Weekly 'As always, Dunn evokes the life and times of 1920s England while providing a plot that is a cut above the average British cosy. This will delight readers who love country-house mysteries.' Booklist 'For fans of Dorothy L. Sayers' novels' Library Journal

Usually the books where Daisy is not in a country house/museum/palatial pile are not so good but this one is excellent. I was disappointed with books 9 and 10 (set in America) but this one is back on form, set in Devon where Daisy (who is pregnant) Alec, Belinda and friend are on holiday.

This time it is Alec, rather than Daisy, who stumbles over a dead body. Suspects abound along with the now comfy familiar elements, a suspect Daisy takes under her wing, spontaneous revelations to our heroine, witty dialogue and enjoyable characters.

Enjoyable read 11 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The characters were all charming and believable, and the descriptions of the Devon coastal paths really glorious. This was my introduction to Daisy and her family - and I have now downloaded several more books in the series. If they are as enjoyable as this little mystery, I will be lost in reading for some time :)

There is not an eccentric toff in sight, but despite that the book works well. Dunn conjours a perfectly reasonable mystery from a seaside holiday without succumbing to the temptation to give the children a particularly leading role. Unlike in Mistletoe and Murder (Daisy Dalrymple 11) she goes easy on the Enid Blyton references, but there are snatches of Arthur Ransome in a (sometimes) jolly tar home on leave from the Royal Navy and given to bursting into sea shanties.

There is a somewhat contrived, but well-described lifeboat rescue which far outdoes the frankly poor mid-Atlantic sinking earlier in the series.
