Book Description

Adnan and Daniel are real boys. Only their names have been changed -to protect the writer.
The Fall Guy, though, he's not real.
Not really real.
Not yet.
Not till he can get his stick hands on the one who should have been sacrificed -instead of him.
But he can't- can't go back through every Autumn to that moment, seared on his memory, when the those he loved chose him as a victim.
If he could, why then he could wreak upon the world every revenge that he had dreamt of in two thousand Autumns of fire and hatred.
Daniel and Adnan, now,- those living proofs that opposites don't attract - they can return through time. They must. Back through Time is their only way out of the Fall Guy's power.
Can they use Daniel's knowledge and Adnan's Koranic verses, Adnan's guile and Daniel's forthrightness to survive, complete their mission and trick the arch trickster?
Frightening and funny by turns, cheer the mismatched pair on a unique adventure. Join them sliding in
and out of Reality and Imagination, both thronged with characters up to no good.
No magic swords, no wizard guide, no age-old organisation, no destiny, no scrolls to ease their way.
Just their wits - and the products of their Imaginations, God help them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 25 Sept. 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
I like the realism of this book. Real kids : These two squabble big time and don't just sink their differences because the plot demands it. A lot of the fun is in seeing if they'l l manage to work together.
Real problems with food: How do you get a halal meal in mediaeval England?
Language, toilets and all in real historical events in Derby.
As the kids overcome these difficulties on their trudge back into the past your respect for them grows. And that means that the fantasy is just that much more enchanting - and threatening.
I like the way these 2 don't have a guide or magic scroll or some such to tell them what to do. One of them has his school learning, the other the Koran to help them make it up as they go along.

And that means it can get quite scary as these 2 aren't on a quest -you know, find the magic crystal stuff- but have been given a job they don't want to do.

And it's not just the 2 characters; the others- Real and Imaginary - are great too.
This is a great adventure for any one from 9 onwards.
I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical adventure through time and space 29 Sept. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
"They looked at each other and two certainties came home to both of them. One was that they did not understand each other at all really. And the other was that they had only each other to rely on."

Daniel and Adnan are from the same town and go to the same school but they seem to inhabit different worlds. Then one All Hallows' Eve they take tumble through time together and end up realising they have more in common that they could ever have imagined. Along the way they encounter Kings and yokels, princes and peasants, Vikings, highwaymen, soldiers and a talking dog.

Of course it's hard to talk of a magical adventure featuring ten year old boys without mentioning H**** P***** and there is much here to appeal to Potter fans young and old. However, Birtles has a style all of his own. The story is peppered with references to literature, geography, history and popular culture and but always in a fun-filled and playful way. The prose is suffused with the evocative glow of an autumnal night making it perfect for the coming season and beyond....

3.0 out of 5 stars Judith's review 27 Dec. 2011

This is an interesting and exciting story centred on the town of Derby. It covers a wide sweep of history and brings in information about various cultures and mythologies in an entertaining way.
The two central characters are clearly and solidly drawn. There is a lot of humour.
Just two criticisms - sometimes the style is a bit ponderous and the underlying speculations about 'Reality' and 'Imagination' are somewhat confusing. However, the story is unusual and appealing and could be enjoyed by intelligent 10 year olds as well as by adults.
