Kaye C Hill has come back with the same team in the same familiar surroundings. We can feel at home with the scenario and concentrate on the plot. It seems to be a winning formula so far, like settling back to watch an episode of Midsomer Murders where mayhem erupts in an unlikely rural retreat. The author gathers pace in her second book and the characters are becoming more substantial. Her ability to catch the atmosphere with the twitch of an eyebrow or flick of an irritable tail sets the scene perfectly. Once again a small book to tuck into your luggage as you board the aircraft or catch a train. The problem is with a real page turner like this you might just forget to get off at your destination!

The Fall Girl 24 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Lexy Lomax, working as a private detective out of her fisherman's cabin in the Suffolk, England village of Clopwolde-on-Sea, is hired by a 16-tear-old girl to investigate the recent death of a woman she'd never met. This strange request is, somewhat dubiously, explained by the fact that the girl, Rowana Paterson, is convinced that her attempt at witchcraft has produced fatal results. A fuller explanation deals with the dead woman having left to Rowana all her worldly goods, including her cottage in a place called Freshing Hill.

Thirty-year-old Lexy has literally escaped three months prior from her previous life as Alexandra Warwick-Holmes, the trophy wife of an antiques dealer of questionable morality, taking her [well, technically, her husband's] scarred, caramel-coloured Chihuahua, Kinky, with her

While I must admit that generally books with paranormal/occult/four-footed beings are generally not in my comfort zone [understanding that YMMV], this author and her protagonist had me completely charmed very quickly. [The tiny animal has an important but non-speaking, non-detecting role. I must say, though, that I'm not sure what a Chihuahua's eyes look like when they "tighten."]

Lexy's investigation at the dead woman's cottage, with the invaluable assistance of her friend, DI Bernard Milo, takes some suspenseful and unexpected turns, with a wholly satisfying resolution. A thoroughly delightful tale [the second in the series], the novel is recommended.

By Lizzie Hayes TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Lexy Lomax is in hiding in Suffolk, with her dog Kinky, taking on detective work to keep body and soul together, when sixteen- year-old Rowana Paterson confesses to killing an unknown woman by magic. An unknown woman has left her a fortune, having died the day after Rowana evoked Helandra, Supreme Goddess of the Moon, to provide her, Rowana, with money by whatever means. Lexy isn't sure that she should take the case, but the rent is pressing and she has just discovered that her violent ex-husband is due in the vicinity, so against her better judgment she agrees to check out how Elizabeth Cassall died to put Rowana's mind at rest.

It all seems pretty simple on the face of it, but life is rarely that and Lexy finds herself caught up with the occupants of Pilgrim Farm as she checks out Rowana's inheritance, Four Winds Cottage. Why do Bruce and his sons Ward and Tyman want to buy the cottage so desperately? Then Rowana's family get involved and life becomes even more complicated. Popping up and attempting to keep Lexy out of trouble is Detective Inspector Bernard Milo, he of the ice-blue eyes.

A good mystery, some marvellous characters and some sparkling dialogue. Kept me guessing to the end. Highly recommended.
