Product Description

BBC Review

At first glance there’s something unassuming and, in some respects, unremarkable about the eighth studio album by this Canadian singer-songwriter. Like many albums from the country and western stable, these neatly manicured songs deal with the usual time-honoured themes and dreams familiar to both lovers and detractors of the genre. Yet the real measure of this particular record’s worth can be measured by the speed at which any of the tunes from Fall For Beauty burrow deep into the subconscious.

With a voice that hovers somewhere between the earthiness of Nanci Griffith and the light-as-air flutter found in the vocals of Emmylou Harris at her most ardent, Miles can work wonders on songs which might be worthy but otherwise undistinguished. Only a few singers have that kind of Midas touch and she shows off that rare ability to great effect.

Up-tempo, catchy-as-hell numbers such as Something Beautiful and Fearless Heart radiate a winning, good-time feel, and its impossible not to warm to the swaying charms of Three Chords and the Truth. Here she takes the quote about the essence of country music made famous by revered writer Harlan Howard, and marries it to a smart and affectionate pastiche of Willie Nelson’s Pretty Paper.

Perhaps the best moment on the album is also its most simplest and direct. On the starkly produced Love Doesn’t Hurt, she stares at the myriad of paradoxes and consuming energies created when two people fall in love, and considers the consequences of what happens when love turns into abuse. Poignant without being in any way sentimental, it shows a writer in full command of her craft.

Again a great master piece of Lynn. She keeps enjoying us with great songs, lovely singing and great music.
Worth to be added to everybody's collection. If you hear Lynn's music you will add quickly all her album and can not wait to see her perform live.

Canadian Singer Miles makes great US debut with this album - with one small misstep in the final track 25 Jan 2011
By Steven I. Ramm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Singer/songwriter Lynn Miles has been big (actually HUGE) in Canada with seven albums under her belt and a JUNO (their Grammy) Award. But she was new to me here in the US. When this CD arrived, I popped it in my player and, from the first track - "Something Beautiful" - I found myself tapping my foot and dancing around the room. The rest of the album didn't let me down either, except for one track that I'll mention in a minute.

There are 10 songs on the album, all penned by Miles. With one co-write with her producer, Ian Lefeuvre, who not only produced the disc but also plays an amazing range of instruments on it. (Electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, banjo, percussion, mandolin, melodica and more!). There is a nice balanced mix of tempos including the "boom chicka boom" beat of "Fearless Heart" and the "Americana waltz" style of "Little Bird". "Save Me" is another track that will have you tapping your feet - as well as singing along with Miles on the chorus. The co-written song "Goodbye" is country radio ready and "Love Doesn't Hurt" has the sparest of arrangement, with just a solo acoustic guitar accompanying Miles smooth and pretty vocals.

The final track on the album is the one I mentioned in the first paragraph. "Time To Let The Sun" is a total departure from the rest of the songs and arrangements. This Miles-penned song sounds like something written during the heyday of the American Popular Song and could have easily been recorded by Judy Garland. Nice song, and Miles sings it well, but its WAY out of place here. If she wants to do an album of pop standards, theis would fit in. Or release it as a single. But, in my opinion, it doesn't belong on this album.

But I'm glad I found Miles and will check out her earlier albums. She definitely has the talent and a great partner in Lefeuvre.

Beautiful Folk Songs 27 Dec 2011
By Rachel Kramer Bussel - Published on Amazon.com

I discovered Lynn Miles when a friend put a song, "Big Brown City," on a mix tape a long time ago, but hadn't listened to her for a long time. This is a beautiful album, and one that touches on themes relevant to what's going on in the world today (especially "Something Beautiful," which reminds us that amidst a setting where "everything's broken or about to break," we can still appreciate and strive for beauty, not of the grandiose sort, but the basic, everyday kind), while others are love songs, but heartfelt, adult ones, not sappy ones. They showcase Miles's songwriting, guitar playing and voice (sometimes with more or less instrumentation), and are catchy; I've found myself replaying a few over and over and over. At times, her voice and songs have more of a country-ish tone, like on "Three Chords and a Truth" and "Goodbye." My favorites are "Something Beautiful," "I Will" and "Love Doesn't Hurt." This will appeal to fans of Kim Richey, the Dixie Chicks and folk and singer/songwriter types.
Truly Something Beautiful! 7 Mar 2011

Lynn Miles possesses a crystalline voice and she shows it off on her latest release, Fall for Beauty. Not only is she an amazing singer, an accomplished guitarist and one of the best songwriters of this generation, Lynn Miles is an artist of the highest quality. If you ever have the chance to see her live, take it.

Fall for Beauty opens with the hopeful but honest 'Something Beautiful' and finishes with the whimsical 'Let the Sun Have It's Day', all in all there are ten original songs about love and loss with an honest emotion that is rare in this day and age. From 'Cracked and Broken', my personal favorite, "Poets fall for truth and the soldiers fall for duty and the girls fall for the bad boys and the bad boys fall for beauty", It is pretty easy to fall for Lynn Miles. All of Lynn's cds are worth having and this one may be the one to start with if you are not familiar with her work. The cover art is by Israeli born Canadian Nava Waxman, also someone worth checking out. Five stars are not enough for this singer and this release!
