If you love historical mysteries, then you will love Lindsey Davis' Falco series. They are set in ancient Rome during the time of the Emperor Vespasian. Falco is the detective a scruffy smart-aleck, with a girlfriend who is much too good for him, a large "colorful" family & various helpful friends. The series has wit, style & a close attention to historical detail. But buyer beware! This is not a new book in the series, this is a 3 book combo of the 3rd, 4th & 5th books: Venus in Copper, The Iron Hand of Mars & Posiedon's Gold. The first two books (& yes you REALLY do need to read them in order) are Silver Pigs & Shadows in Bronze. There are 11 books in the series so far & I recommend them all very highly!

Like all Lindsey Davis's books this omnibus is a most enjoyable read. It is full of details of life in ancient Rome and its colonies. The characters are all well drawn and the stories have a gentle humour which makes all the Falco books very entertaining.

Great value bundle 5 Mar 2011
By Naomi Kramer - Published on Amazon.com

This was my first experience of the Falco series, and I'm impressed. The three books were a great introduction to the characters, the portrait of daily Roman life in the time of the Roman Empire seemed very well researched (not that I'm an expert), and the characters felt believable and real.
I think I would have enjoyed these books no matter what the setting, but it did add a great spice to the reading. Lots of little details of living in the Rome of the era without chunks of exposition. The mysteries had that nice balance between predictability (it's nice to feel smart, right?) and surprise.
Heartily recommended for people who enjoy historical fiction and mysteries. Some knowledge of ancient Roman culture probably helps this feel more comfortable.

Lindsey Davis's Falco mystery series is great fun. For those who enjoy history--specifically Roman--Falco is a must. The characters run true to their personalities--not an easy thing to accomplish.
