I woke up this morning, and instantly knew that I had to read the final chapters of "Fake Kate" before doing anything else with the day. I don't usually read in the mornings, but last night, as I willed my eyelids to stay open, they cruelly collapsed just after 3am, robbing me of the chance to find out how this intriguing book would end. Thankfully, I've caught up now! Eating, drinking and personal hygiene can resume.

The first half of the book takes you through a series of dates where, as the blurb suggests, Belinda pretends to be her illustrious sister Kate. She meets some interesting characters, ranging from terrifying to hilarious. I was just thinking, "Well, this is a jolly entertaining romantic comedy," when suddenly it morphed into an outstanding psychological thriller!

Although I was enjoying the dates, the change in direction was welcome and turned a good story into a tremendous one, with twists, turns and red herrings galore.

The characters were well developed and Wailing has a way of making you feel as though you know somebody inside out, almost instantly. As I read, a very vivid and colourful picture played in my mind, thanks to Wailing's rich narrative. Some of the descriptions were so good that I jotted down bits of them.

I really wanted to give this book five stars - it's extremely well written, it's exciting and it's surprising - however, the ending, whilst excellent and unexpected, included a plot device that triggered a personal gripe. I can't explain without including a spoiler, but let's just say, it's the kind of niggle that won't bother ninety percent of readers and despite it, David Wailing has earned a place among my favourite authors.

All in all, a terrific read and a real asset to the world of indie publishing. I have already bought "Bang (Memoirs of a Relationship Assassin)" and I'm looking forward to devouring it as soon as possible.

Fake Kate 14 Oct 2011

The cover always drew my eye and I'd looked at the write up a few times but the £1.71 was a bit too expensive for my stinginess. But after tasting the sample I knew I was hooked. I needed to know about Kate.

The story was gripping from the start. I loved Team Kate (and surprisingly the 4th member). I could quite imagine Belinda running around London looking for clues as to Kate's whereabouts.
The book seemed a meaty size. After all the plots and twists and turns I was surprised to only be at 50%. Perhaps the scenes in the nightclubs went on a bit too long for my liking but it was all relevant to the plot.
This was a story where you didn't know where it was going nor where it would end. I had a few ideas, but they were cast aside.

A big thumbs up from me

It took me a couple of chapters to get into this novel but I gradually found myself hooked. 'Fake Kate' takes you on a roller coaster of highs and lows and I couldn't put it down until I'd finished. Written in a light-hearted style that is both humorous and easy-to-read, the novel raises issues about identity, relationships, self-knowledge, the subconscious, memory, sight loss and internet dating. It also allowed me to vicariously enter the London clubbing and DJ-ing scene, which was a lot of fun! The novel portrays the city as a playground for young people, moving from all over the world in search of money, love and/or adventures - it can be a lot of fun but it can also very isolating; this is very true of London, I think. I really liked the use of graphics at the end of each chapter. This is something I've not come across in any of my kindle reads before. I was also impressed with the images of the passports.

I would recommend this novel for anyone looking for an enjoyable and fun read that's a bit out of the ordinary.
