Book Description

It is April 1918 and May Keaps is a twenty year old ambulance driver stationed at The Front. As if transporting hideously wounded soldiers, sleep deprivation and constant shell bombardment weren’t enough, she becomes unwittingly entangled in the untimely death of a young captain of the Cambridgeshire Pals’ Battalion. Newly-arrived in Northern France he was found with a discharged pistol by his side; rumours on the battlefield were it wasn’t an accident but that he had taken the coward’s way out and committed suicide. Whatever the explanation, Tobias Fairfax left a dangerous legacy of his past that only May finds herself in a position to de-fuse. Except she is not the only one with a desperate reason to get to the bottom of the truth. And by someone who, in a world where life can be extinguished in the blink of an eye, has nothing left to lose. Faith’s Reward is a prequel to the historical crime novel, Foul Trade.

More About the Author

Born on a steam railway and brought up on the South Coast of England, such beginnings were destined to leave BK Duncan with a love of vintage transport, crashing seas, and Art Deco architecture.

Following a career encompassing developmental learning and management consultancy (specialising in personal and organisational change) she made the switch to full time writer, combining producing her own work with lecturing in creative writing in colleges and academies in Hertfordshire and Cambridge. Her summers are spent on two never-ending tasks - re-pointing the walls of her flint cottage and reclaiming the wilderness of her meadow garden. For relaxation she reads, goes to the theatre, and explores the local countryside but her two great passions are longbow archery and the Argentine Tango. Sadly, she is not nearly as accomplished at either as she'd like.

Her proudest moment was when she overcame her fear of deep water to go potholing in the Yorkshire Pennines.

A short treat for the many Kindle readers who, like me, continue to be haunted and fascinated by aspects of the First World War.
It is particularly satisfying to find a story which prioritises the amazing and courageous women who worked on the Front, who were often placed in the most dangerous environments in essential nursing and support roles.
Although ‘Faith’s Reward’ is quite brief (estimated at 19 pages by Kindle) the author rises to the challenge and presents an accomplished and thoughtful tale. It is certainly an interesting read, and as one of Kindle’s free ebooks, it is very good value!
I also really look forward to revisiting the interesting character May Keaps, in BK Duncan’s new novel ‘Foul Trade’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story. Well researched 31 Aug. 2014

This touching story set in France during WW1 tells how May, a courageous ambulance driver, sets aside her own fear to do her duty which is to pick up casualties from the front. The horror of trying to get the victims to safety through war-torn streets is vividly portrayed. There is another view of the cruelty of war that results in an interesting twist. Good story. Well researched.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing May Keaps 29 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A gripping introduction to May Keaps in this moving and compelling short story from BK Duncan (author of Foul Trade). Shining brightly through the darkness and pain of life at 'the Front' are the efforts of a compassionate and dedicated ambulance driver doing the best she can to help others. May's kindness and empathy for others, in the face of death, make her a worthy heroine indeed and bring a tear to the eye. Great read -- loved it.

This free short story offers something that is strangely (and dishearteningly) uncommon: the perspective of a woman in a war zone.

The story takes us through the barbarity of war and the resulting personal tragedies that unfold as we are introduced to May Keaps, an ambulance driver on the front line in 1918.

It's definitely worth a look and I'm now going to go and read the novel that follows on from this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Faith's Reward 12 Sept. 2014

This story is very short and yet says all there is to say about one person's love for another during the horrors of the First World War. It is well researched, and told from the point of view of a female ambulance driver rather than a soldier, so has an added element of sympathy. I would like to read more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!! 6 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great introduction to May Keaps who I am looking forward to meeting again in "Foul Trade" another fabulous example of the important part women played in the war. it shows the amazing empathy and courage shown by these women, laying their life on the line in just the same way as the men. A very good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't do book reviews .... 24 Sept. 2014

I don't do book reviews........ I read the book and if I liked it I give it up to 5 stars, if I didn't then it gets a 2, if I didn't finish then it's a 1, that's it I'm afraid.

I read it, I like it, I want more from the author.

As with a vast number of Kindle books there might be the odd spelling and punctuation errors.
After reading over 300 Kindle books of all types and subjects you get use to them and they become less noticeable, unless they effect the story.
