Good for FR fans 4 Jun 2002
Format:Hardcover
Faiths & Pantheons is essentially a 3rd edition version of Faiths & Avatars. The book itself is in the trademark style of the FRCS (Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting), which keeps continuity with the other books and looks good too. For the actual content - it is good. Not excellent, and if you are happy with the 2nd edition F&A book then you'll have much less reason to buy this, but if you are a DM who runs campaigns in the FR world (or simply an FR enthusiast like me) then the book is worth getting. There is more information on the deities and their avatars rather than their clerics this time around, I would have preferred both, but a lot of content was cut from the book because of space reasons (one of the factors which prevents it from reaching 5 stars). It does though, include new PrC's and three temple information sections, as well as some sample adventures with hooks to lead your characters in.
The artwork (one of the most important things) is variable - the other reason this book does not manage the 5 star rating. Some pieces are excellent, Selune, Shar, Lathander, Helm, Sune, and also of particular excellence is the Waveservant PrC. Some of the others are too bound to the mythological mind's image - Talos seems far too much like Zeus for my liking for example. Perhaps a larger section could've been devoted to non-human yet important deities, such as Corellon Larethian too.
If you combine this book with the 2nd edition F&A you'll have the most complete sources on FR religion. But mostly this is for those who didn't have F&A.

Good, but not great 23 Jan 2003
Format:Hardcover
Another well put together addition to the WotC's Realms line, great arwork, huge amounts of details on the dogma and beliefs of most of the pantheon, and some good prestige classes to fill out your speciality priests.

What's bad? In my view the gods did not need stat blocks, I understand that some campaigns might be high enough level to challenge the gods, but in most campaigns knowing how many hit dice and what Tyr's BAB is will really be useless.

The stat blocks also take up a lot of room which in my opinion could have been better filled with more prestige classes to make speciality priests. I know the whole 3ed prestige class options means you can make your own, but I for one would have preferred to see a prestige class for every god, and multiple classes for some of the gods based on their numerous domains.

So good old Cyric could have had a PrC based on his 'murder' portfolio and one on his 'illusion', both radically different but tied to the same ethos.

Still, the book is certainly worthwhile and of great use to anyone playing a cleric or a religiously minded PC. Explaining everything from the holy days to favoured colours to dogma and ethos can fill in the blanks for that cleric of Lathander you always wanted to play!

Faiths of Faerūn 20 Mar 2008
By T. R. Alexander TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Faiths & Pantheons details all the deities commonly worshiped within the Forgotten Realms. The book is split into separate parts beginning with detailed entries for thirty of the most popular gods and goddesses worshiped by PCs and MPCs alike. After this there are short but informative entries for the rest of the deities of the Realms each split into their respective pantheons. After this there is a section detailing three holy sites for use in your campaign and finally the obligatory section for Prestige Classes appropriate for the various gods.

As someone who regularly plays as a cleric this book has been of tremendous use containing a wealth of information on the rites, temples, history and dogma of the various faiths active in Faerūn, although some of the entries for the less well known gods are rather brief. The art is as good as you would expect from a Forgotten Realms accessory, although personally I don't like the portraits of the Elven gods. The main problem with this book is that it isn't as well set out as some of the other accessory books I have read and does need some proof reading in places. Overall this is a solid book that, although not a necessity, would be a good addition to any Forgotten Realms campaign.
