Bought this a few months back and it's been used for a number of projects so far.

The VERY first thing I did though was fine tune it, because it was obvious it needed it, but then at this price you can't expect out-of-the-box smooth running, and if you do, you shouldn't even have a plane in your hands as you obviously know little about woodwork.

Once I'd lapped the base and a couple other things it ran smoothly, the blade holds a good sharp edge, certainly enough for basic smoothing, but I found it hard to get a razor sharp one, I guess the steel isn't quite up to it (again the price makes this obvious) so I wouldn't call this a finishing plane.

I did have one minor niggle (well 1 niggle twice) which was the 2 bolts that hold the frog to the base got threaded and loose whilst under use, I wasn't excessive with the tool, but I think the bolts used were of very inferior steel as I've not seen a bolt get stripped of it's thread so easily. Not a major problem though and certainly not worth the aggro of returning it as it would only come back with the same type of bolts, so I replaced them myself with slightly larger better steel ones and so far all's good, the cast iron frog is easily strong enough to take the extra pressure of fractionally bigger bolts without cracking.

Box is junk though, broken on delivery, just like everyone else says, and the set doesn't fit both in with the lid flat unlike the photo, the block plane sits at an awkward angle, neither on its side or base as the mounting blocks inside prevent it. 1st project...make a box :)

All in all I'd recommend this as a good cheap set of planes for basic shaping, once it's been given some tuning. 4/5 for the planes 1/5 for the box.

Major disappointment when inspecting my delivery of this plane set:

The back of the plane Iron of the n°4 smoothing plane had a corroded/steel imperfection spot(2-3mm)on one of the corners of the steel's back, right on the cutting edge. As these pits are impossile to grind out I will not be able to get a straight cutting edge on my plane, rendering the plane usesless as a smoothing plane. I will have to find a replacement for the plane iron.

This is a shame though, as by the looks of it, this is otherwise a decent looking plane set - especially considering the price.

Great for the price, not a top of the range plane but solid enough. A couple of hours flattening the backs of the plane irons and then a bit more honing them with the trend fast track sharpening system and paper thin shavings of oak were not a problem. If I could afford and justify a Veritas or Lie Neilson plane I'm sure I would buy one, but for the money and a bit of effort the quality is good enough for most.

Product is good quality, solid, and works as required.
Box is a little flimsy - I don't see it surviving in the workshop very long, but I did not get the plane for the box.

I purchased this set mainly because I wanted a cheap block plane but as the price of this set was so cheap and based on other reviews I purchased it. What I didn't expect was the superb quality of these tools. They look as if they would last at least 50 years. I admit the brand name "Faithfull" had me wondering if these were the sort of rubbish that is picked up new from car boot sales, but believe me these are the mutts nuts. I hope this company can get round to manufacturing some nice handsaws in the future.

Useful tools. First, sharpened and set them up.
The setting is a bit complicated.
Nice surfaces prepared.
Error-free castings.
Even less was used.

This is a great value plane set and once setup they work really well. Don't expect the case to last long but I'm glad the money went into the planes.
