The Motherlode for Sebastian's 70's Output 24 Feb. 2007
By Steve Vrana - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Rhino Handmade only issued 3,000 copies of this 3-CD box set. [I have No. 495--and all 3,000 have been sold, so your only option is to buy a copy from a second-party vendor.] While Collectors' Choice Music has recently re-released the five albums contained here (JOHN B. SEBASTIAN, REAL LIVE, THE FOUR OF US, TARZANA KID and WELCOME BACK), hardcore fans will want this 2001 release for several reasons:

-the 48-page booklet is filled with photos, a recent interview and reminiscences of each album and many of the individual tracks, original album art and liner notes, and a track-by-track listing of all the musician who performed on each song.

-The remastering is terrific. These songs have never sounded better.

-As a bonus, disc-3 includes Sebastian's entire Woodstock performance. So you not only get "Rainbows All Over Your Blues" and "I Had a Dream" (which were included on the original Woodstock soundtrack), but you also get "How Have You Been" (from his--at the time--yet unreleased solo debut) and "Darlin' Be Home Soon" and "Younger Generation."

-An additional bonus on disc-3 is six previously unreleased songs recorded in mono from an October 4, 1969, performance at Winterland in San Francisco. These live solo recordings include "Sitting on Top of the World," "Magical Connection," "You're a Big Boy Now," "I Found a Dream" (written by blues musician Lonnie Johnson, NOT the similarly titled "I Had a Dream," which Sebastian wrote for his solo debut), "Daydream" and "Younger Girl." All six of these are terrific performances--especially the bluegrass standard "Sittin' on Top of the World," where Sebastian does some fancy picking--a song he says he learned from Doc Watson.

While I would recommend the CCM re-releases, for about the same price you can purchase this box set and get all the extras. [Running Time - Disc 1, 78:18; Disc 2 78:29; Disc 3, 76:52] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

John Sebastian on display... 13 July 2007
By Rene J. Depontbriand - Published on Amazon.com

I was really looking forward to this 3-disk, limited edition set of John Sebastian's recordings. It includes some bootleg pieces, the only full recordings of his performance at Woodstock where I'd personally heard him back in 1969, some alternate versions of some of my favorite songs.

Let's call it a bit along the lines of the Beatles Anthology. Not everything is polished, not every song _should_ have been recorded, and some of the tunes here are not _my_ favorite Sebastian. That said, at least 75% of the music is his pure, easy energy, his obvious love of singing and of people and of his way of reflecting a whole lot of life's experiences we all go through, and he does it with a loving, intimate, "it's just us" tone. "Rain on the Roof," "She's a Lady," "The Room Nobody Lives In"---great musical poems. I had seen the Lovin' Spoonful back around 1966; I saw John at Woodstock in 1969; and seem him again in Boston around 1971. Just one joyous, incredibly talented performer. Aside from his extreme "good-time" numbers with too much jug-band style, this is an excellent, rare anthology of one of our most talented and beloved singer-songwriters of the recent era. Movie scores, "Welcome Back (Kotter)" and life scores for almost all baby boomers, an outstanding compilation. There are only 3,000 in existence, all now in private hands, recommend you buy it if you get the chance.

Praise and Ridicule to Rhino Records 16 July 2013

John Sebastian
Faithful Virtue: The Reprise Recordings
3 CD Set - Rhino (limited numbered release)

This is a nearly flawless anthology of John Sebastian's solo efforts. It even includes his entire (unedited) performance at Woodstock 1969.

This is a Five plus Star release.

The only problem is that Rhino only made a limited number of this release. Are only fans from the past `worthy' of owning a great anthology? Are only fans with deep pockets worthy of owning such an anthology?

Rhino deserves 5 Stars for assembling such a great set, but they deserve our contempt for falling into the consumer insulting `limited edition' syndrome.

John Sebastian - a BETTER Image .... PLEASE! 4 April 2008
By David T. Votau - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
My complaint in regards to this product is certainly NOT an issue ... JOHN SEBASTIAN's "Faithful Virtue" is an outstanding production in every way and the he is by far one of the most important Artist/Songwriters of recent American music. This is without a doubt an album (CD) that any music collector (with 'taste') should own - as the earlier reviewers have stated. My actual 'complaint' is with the IMAGE ... it would be so nice for people to experience a much larger and clear image of this CD. Reason? It is simply an extremely wonderful picture and representation of JOHN SEBASTIAN. I hope the original Customer Image can be upgraded from that of a microscopic thumbprint ... to that of what the Artist desrves. Great CD, beautiful Image ... let folks enjoy. Larger pictures could enhance the sale of this product as well. ENJOY!
