5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant debut book 25 Aug 2011
By TerryB
Format:Paperback
Devon James has not had a good childhood. She suffered abuse from her alcoholic mother, which got worse after Devon admitted she was gay.. Devon joined the army to escape and with the hopes of improving her life. At the end of boot camp training, Devon was recommended for officer training. Devon meets and falls in love with Jillian, the woman of her dreams. Unfortunately the CID (Criminal Investigations Division) have Jillian on their radar. Both Devon and Jillian's careers are at risk as the CID begins a witch hunt against them and their friends. Circumstances cause Devon to lose the woman she loves and she throws herself into moving on with her career.
Devon is posted to the middle east, where she suffers a tragic loss and is injured herself. On her return stateside to recover, Devon discovers the CID are still determined to oust her from her exemplary career. They will stop at nothing, even telling lies and trumping up evidence. It doesn't even matter that Devon is a highly decorated, officer and a brilliant leader.

Will the CID get the evidence against Devon? Will Devon ever find the love she so badly needs?
A riveting, nail biting story I simply couldn't put down. This book fired up so many emotions for me. The character Devon, will stay with me for a long time. The anger I felt at the CID knocked me sideways. Only a well written story could bring these feelings out in me. I honestly felt as though I was there with Devon every step of the way.
I served in the military in the early 1970's, in a different country from where this book is set. But no one would know the difference between the way the two armed forces conducted their witch hunts. The behaviour of the CID is so accurate, it caused shivers down my spine.
Well done Lynette Mae, this is a brilliant debut book.. I look forward to reading more from you in the very near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic debut book. 18 Jun 2012
By Kitty
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book to be one of the best I have read, and I have read a lot in this genre. The characters had depth and were both likeable and interesting while the story itself was extremely well written and in keeping with the truth behind the story. I would definitely recommend this book to others and look forward to reading more written by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 7 Jan 2012
By Trogg
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the debut book by Lynette Mae and what a debut book. It focuses on serving in the military under DADT and the problems faced by gay member of the armed forces and how careful they had to be not to reveal too much about their private lives for fear of being discharged from the forces.
I couldn't put the book down and found myself wanting to protect Devon from the CID. There were some sad bits in the book and some happier times but you felt that Devon would come out stronger in the end.
I look forward to Lynette's next book - it's already on my list of books to buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, Talented Author 28 April 2012
By T. T. Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I loved this book! The writing was wonderful, the characters keenly drawn and the story line kept me turning pages well past bedtime. I appreciated the care with which this author treated the pent-up emotions, well-reasoned fears and fierce loyalty of gay members of the military before DADT was reversed. The requirements of living under wraps in the military informed the entire emotional and romantic realities for our gay and lesbian military members.

The freedoms most of us now enjoy in terms of public disclosure were not remedies available while DADT was the policy. I liked this book and the characters because their passions for country and love were no less dramatic merely because they were undisclosed. Lynette Mae captures this dichotomy brilliantly, revealing the deepening layers of her characters' personalities and emotional lives as they confront the needlessly criminal assaults levied upon gays and lesbians who were willing to die for one another and their country.

This is a very talented author. Well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice debut 15 Jan 2012
By Sage320 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Faithful Service, Silent Hearts is a view of what life was like for gays in the US military before the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy went into effect. Now that that policy has been ended, the book serves as a reminder of what used to be. It's important that younger people have books that remind them of what people went through before changes were made in any situation.

Devon James excels as a soldier and a leader in boot camp and is quickly put on the fast track as an officer. She is outstanding at everything she does, but she lives with the secret that she is gay. Devon experiences great pain as her first love is taken from her in a witch hunt and she loses the second one to a tragedy. Devon shuts down her emotions to protect herself and her career, but eventually will be drawn out by a surprising contact from her past. When her career is threatened again, Devon has to make the choice between staying in the military that she loves so much or leaving the service and living a more open life. Either one comes with a heavy price.

This story is well told and interesting. It's a good debut novel for Lynette Mae because it features something with which she is personally familiar so the story has a sense of authenticity about it. Some of the scenes are a bit rushed and the conclusion is somewhat contrived, but that's more a sign of a new author. Experience should teach her to smooth out those bumps. The book could have used a better content editor. For example, in one scene two characters are drinking beer from a pitcher, go play a game of pool and when they return to the table, they are drinking from bottles. It's little things like that which can distract an attentive reader and should not happen in a book.

As a whole, Faithful Service, Silent Hearts is a good read. The weaknesses don't overshadow the book and it shows enough promise to make this reviewer curious to read Lynette Mae's next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book Club Choice! 12 July 2012
By E. B. MULLIGAN - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Devon James escapes an abusive alcoholic mother, whose torment escalated because Devon is gay. In boot camp she is targeted by her female drill sergeant and gets the worst treatment of any of her platoon. Apparently she understands the more miserable they make you the higher they regard you and at the end she gets sent to Officer Candidate School.

Devon certainly doesn't have it easy next, her first relationship leaves the army after accusations and harassment from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) that she is gay.

Her next posting is in the Mideast, and a new relationship ends in tragedy. Devon is also injured and she shuts down emotionally, lives for her career. She has been considered by all who have worked with her to be the perfect American Officer.

Eventually her career is threatened by the CID, they are rabid in their need to end her career, and she has to make the choice between her first obsession, the military, or starting anew.

Faithful Service, Silent Hearts is a debut novel for Lynette Mae and the story has a feel to it that it may be as much fact as fiction. I am looking forward to readying her next novel although I just never identified with Devon James, I don't think the novel was long enough to evidence her brilliance. I think I would have felt an affinity if she had been less exemplary, maybe. This was a piercing view into American military before President Obama and the military itself put an end to persecution of gays. I did feel totally angry at every bigoted bully in the novel so that was a plus.

An Excellent Book Club Choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving and beautifully told story 25 Jun 2012
By MB - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As other reviewers have already provided a synopsis of this book, I will refrain from doing so. Faithful Service, Silent Hearts is a moving and beautifully told story that will stay with the reader far after finishing the book. The characters are well developed and Lynette Mae has done a fine job in making certain that their actions ring true; a critical component in a book of this nature. Lynette allows the reader to gain insight into the world of the military during the time of DADT in a heart wrenching story that is well paced and certain to evoke strong feelings in the reader. While DADT is certainly a powerful theme throughout the book, the book also sends a strong message about the power of friendship, camaraderie and trust. You need not have served in the military to enjoy this book; this is a book that should be read by everyone, military and non-military persons alike. Lynette Mae should be proud of this book; she should be proud because she crafted a well written story that honors the brave men and women who risk their lives to defend our country. This book will touch you; why else do we read, if not to be touched by what we read? I look forward to more books from this author. She has a powerful writing style that will no doubt garner her many more readers in the years to come.
