Product Description

Product Description

'If anyone has truly had their faith pounded in the fiery crucible of conflict, it is Canon Andrew White. His leadership of the Christian community in Baghdad is quite remarkable. For many, his experiences would have produced anger and bitterness but for him and his congregation their reaction is the opposite: Despite our suffering, he writes, we are not miserable, but joyful! This book explains why, and is compelling reading for people of all faiths and none.' - General Sir Richard Dannatt, GCB CBE MC DL, Chief of the General Staff 2006-2009 Andrew White, the dedicated Vicar of Baghdad , encounters daily tragedy. What happened to his faith when a young girl in his congregation died, after much hope and prayer? Every time he returns to Iraq he may be saying goodbye to his family for the last time. What do they think? He suffers from MS. How does he remain cheerful despite his physical weakness, and its progression? He meets regularly with men who wish to use him. What has kept him free from cynicism? What does he say to God, alone in his study, late at night? Can he see the hand of God? Looking ahead, can he be optimistic about the future? Where are his sources of spiritual energy? 'I first met Andrew in Baghdad in 2003, where we both found ourselves under fire - physically and spiritually! I read the lesson at the Church the day he re-opened it. Whilst in one sense he is no more or less than the rest of us - a man called by God to a task - he is nonetheless someone who has followed that call unremittingly. This eminently readable book tells his extraordinary story in a way that is typical of the man. - Major General Tim Cross, CBE Canon Andrew White is also author of The Vicar of Baghdad.

This man is a hero! 13 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I first heard about this man at my church, and wanted to know more about him. Who would want to go around with a bullet-proof vest on all the time? It is amazing what he has achieved in his role as peace-maker in the Middle East, and as Vicar of St George's Church, Baghdad. This man takes enormous risks. He really lives his faith and he lives by faith. It was a compelling read, and shows what is it is like to live in post-Saddam Iraq. I couldn't put it down.

By J. DOUGLAS TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
When faith, suffering and tragedy mix, we are caused to truly discover what is true. Andrew White, the Vicar of St George's church in Baghdad, writes with conviction from a place of deep suffering, humility and service. Many of his congregation have been killed or maimed, solely because they believe in Jesus Christ and in the salvation he offers to all.

If sufferings help or harden us, then the `Vicar of Baghdad' comes as a unique encouragement, guide and example. Perhaps like Andrew White's people we all might be transformed, if we liturgically spoke out what they do as a weekly practice - "We must love, love, love!"' Every service begins with these words...."God is here and His Holy Spirit is here!" Truly faith under fire, means we need not live in fear, because God is present with us at all times. Energy, passion and authenticity permeate every page!
