Tour de Force. Should be read widely, not least by politicians,

This review is from: Faith, Power and Territory: A Handbook of British Islam (Paperback)
This outstanding book is invaluable to anyone trying to get some understanding of Islam as it manifests itself in the UK in its bewildering variety and alphabet soup of organisations. It is readable but also well indexed and good for reference. In my opinion it should be available in major public libraries and possessed by politicians, public officials concerned with relations with UK Muslims or the planning of education, and by religious bodies. Muslims will vary in their reaction according to their particular orientation and many will feel that they know what they need to or will inevitably hold views conflicting with the analysis in the book, but I'm sure there will be many Muslims who will find it valuable. Islamists who wish to replace the existing political system with a Caliphate will hate it.
Muslims themselves have ensured that they cannot be ignored in the UK and frequently raise issues of public policy. For the rest of us the barriers to understanding are not solely caused by reluctance to learn. Many sources of information are simplistic to the point of obscuring what needs to be known. Muslims themselves, however strong their disagreement with other Muslims, belittle those differences when addressing non-Muslims. Stereotyping is not only a matter of some non-Muslims tarring all Muslims with the same brush but also a matter of Muslims presenting an image which conceals very serious issues. Political correctness may have its uses in reducing gratuitous offence but it does harm when it causes all too real and potentially explosive issues to be evaded in discourse and I believe this evasion is already causing disorder on our streets. It is in the interests of Muslims in the UK as well as the rest of the population that greater and more nuanced understanding with honest realism should gain ground. No other source adequately covers this ground, so vital for understanding Muslims in the UK.
