KINGS X Faith Hope Love (1990 US 13-track CD for the third album by the heavy metal/hard progressive rock trio this album features a mixture of genres clashing to create a unique set of songs imagine The Beatles vocal harmony over Iron Maidenand you would not be that far off and it actually works well comes with a lyric booklet picture sleeve)

King's X lie somewhere between progressive rock and hard rock, and nowhere is that more evident than on this album. They're at their best when rocking out, as on the fast, acrobatic "Moanjam," which occasionally reminds one of Queen's "Headlong." With the slower, delicate "Six Broken Soldiers," they veer more toward Pink Floyd territory; "Fine Art of Friendship" has a fine midtempo groove and some excellent riffs. King's X enjoy harmonizing, as just about every song includes backing vocals, or else two or more of the band members share the lead. The only problem here is that they overdo it, making what could be a series of special moments into just another effect. This, coupled with overly slick production, prevents Faith Hope Love from being a great album. However, it is good, with some fine moments that help make up for its shortcomings. --Genevieve Williams

The third release from this amazing Texan trio is a must for the serious rock fan. Typified by a mix of powerful rock riffing and Beatle-esque three-part vocal harmonies, vented via imaginative songwriting and with instrumental flair, King's X have created a singular musical syntax, best illustrated on their excellent second album, 1989's Gretchen Goes To Nebraska. Why these guys have so far failed to generate chart-busting record sales remains something of a mystery...

My way into King's X was first through "Please Come Home...Mr Bulbous" and then the self titled fourth album. This got me interested, but it wasn't until I picked up the third album "Faith, Hope, Love" that the love affair began.
The album kicks off with "We Are Finding Who We Are", one of the singles released from the album and a wonderfully funky singalong based around a wicked twisty-turny riff. Those trademark gorgeous backing vocals are in full flow from the off. Then the phenomenal "It's Love" with such an immensely life-affirming verse, in the glorious guitar riff as much as the vocals. I usually pay more attention to music than vocals, but King's X write such exquisite vocal melodies and engrossing lyrics that unusually for me, the vocals hold just as much weight as the music.
Ty Tabors's bass playing is always intriguing, and Jerry Gaskill throws in some supremely quirky drum fills here and there, really transforming the feel of many of the songs. And what can I say about Doug Pinnick, he makes enough noise for three people with a rich, warm and full guitar sound. Much credit to Sam Taylor though, and his crystal production.
The album is full of gems, and encompasses a variety of different sounds. After thrashing out the bluesy workout of "Moanjam", "Six Broken Soldiers" follows with it's progressive 6/8 feel. "The Fine Art Of Friendship" is another great catchy song, with lyrics that can't help but make you smile. "Faith, Hope, Love" is a fine epic with a truly memorable refrain of the album's title, while "Legal Kill" takes the album out with acoustic guitar and vocals as a king among ballads.
This album just makes me feel good to be alive, puts a massive smile on my face and could probably help me through anything that life throws at me. A truly sublime experience, whatever you're into just give it a try as the rewards are infinite.

This was the band's third studio release and what a challenge it must have been to attempt to equal the heights reached on the classic Gretchen album which many fans still say is their best ever release.

Of course, I approach this review being a long-time follower of King's X and, whilst I am clearly biased, it is no exaggeration to proclaim Faith Hope Love as another standout album in the band's highly respected career even though commercial success has never really been achieved.

This is rock/metal of the highest class. Brilliantly written, arranged and performed by a genuine power trio.

As one of the band's earlier records, Sam Taylor was still on board as co-producer. He was virtually a fourth band member and the production achieved is crystal clear with plenty of top end bringing Ty Tabor to the fore in all his glory.

I own all the band's albums and this is still a personal favourite. I can't be alone as this is the band's best selling release to date which may come as a surprise to some.

In summary, this is an excellent album with great scope and diversity. Expect big guitar riffs from Ty, the trademark lush vocal harmonies, gutsy vocals from Doug and Gerry's recognizable jazzy drumming style.

If you own only one or two of the band's albums, you really should own this one. Any discerning rock/metal fan should give this a listen.

Standout tracks for me are It's Love, I'll Never Get Tired.., Mr Wilson, 6 Broken Soldiers, Everywhere I Go, Moanjam and Legal Kill.

I really like this CD. All the songs are great but especially I love the songs "It's Love", "Faith Hope Love", and "Fine Art of Friendship". This is great progressive metal. This reminds me of Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger". It is almost as heavy as it.
