Von Horvath is a great Austrian writer of the 1920ies and 30ies. The book was written in 1937 and deals with moral decay in a small German or Austrian town during the early days of National Socialism. This might give the impression that the story is all gloomy. True its political connotations are dark, but the book is mainly an invitation to live by high ethical standards and, also, a refreshing appeal to be everything but Philistine. Last but in no way least it is a touching story of the turn-around in a man's relationship with God.
