I've been teaching myself Latin using the Familia Romana series and learning a lot, but that tends to work best done in a formal style while working through the exercises and I wanted something a bit lighter. Fabulae Mirabiles is ideal - the old familiar stories rendered into Latin, which means you can read the language easily enough and make guesses about most things, without it being too dense or dry. The glossary at the back includes all the words used, which is handy, and you soon find yourself recognising the same verbs from one story cropping up in the next which is good for vocab building.

The shortest stories, Goldilocks, and The Three Little Pigs are accessible enough to read through in a short dose, so you can get a late-night Latin fix without taxing the brain too much. The kind of repetition that makes these tales bedtime favourites is also good for language learners as the same phrases crop up again and again (the whole porridge thing, for example). I think it could be ideal to read to children too, if you're encouraging them with new language work, I can imagine youngsters chiming in happily with the magnus malus lupus (big bad wolf) as he threatens to "huffabo et puffabo" and blow the house down.

Charming and accessible and a nice addition to your Latin bookshelf

This really is a lovely book. Because you know the stories, you can read along and feel fluent in Latin, and when something does flummox you, there is a handy and comprehensive glossary in the back. Great for building confidence and for reinforcing vocabulary. I have bought the book several times, having given previous copies away to grateful friends. If you enjoy reading Latin, you will love this book.

Fairy Tales in Latin 27 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover
Well, very briefly I was looking for an appropriate book in Latin to practice my Latin I have learnt so far. As a beginner in Latin I thought children's books would be the most appropriate. As these stories are only short they suit me down to the ground and we have already read Goldylocks and the Three Bears in class. I think that there are two main advantages in fairy tales in Latin for someone like myself who is learning; firstly the stories are fairly short and so it isn't an epic task to complete and secondary is that fairy stories tend to have a lot of repetition which is useful when learning.
