outstandingly good,
By Captain Kirk "greader" (swansea) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fairy Tales for Hardmen (Audio CD)
One of Leven's best albums, and thats saying something. Some tracks are outstanding - Poor Town for example. Extremely Violent Man is the first J L song I ever heard , and drew me in with its weirdness and the amazing voice. J L's lyrics are always worth listening too, the his voice the best I know of in Rock or folk, his guitar playing amazing and his songs tuneful, soulful and moving. One of my favourite albums of all time. If I had to choose between only listening to DYlan, Neil Young,Joni Mitchell or early Michelle Shocked or Jackie Leven, I would choose Leven.

One of the most honest & moving albums about being a man,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fairy Tales for Hardmen (Audio CD)
The closest I have heard to the power of Jackie live, songs such as "Fear of Women", "Extremely Violent Man" & "Desolation Blues" are raw portrayals of man today with a sense of compassion & encouragement. "When your heart is dead, you've got desolation blues" are lyrics right on the money. The album is not justifying the way men are, it is acknowledging it, but with a view to doing something about it, with hope. "Just f**k right off" are the screamed words of a woman that kicks off the album and you can tell this is not staged. Jackie is portraying men who are not happy with how they are, but are recognising why they are...

A beautiful record...,
This review is from: Fairy Tales for Hardmen (Audio CD)
Why Jackie Leven isnt a household name, I have no idea, I can only think bad timing and bad luck means he isnt up there with the Bobs and Leonards of this world, because he is truly phenomenal singer and poet. This is one of Jackie Earlier solo albums after returning to music after a long absence. Dont get me wrong, there are loads of great Jackie Leven or Sir Vincent (his name under a different record label) albums out there, but this for me is the best. Beautiful, dark, soulful and energetic. A fantastic blend or rock, folk and poetry. Explores loneliness, addiction, regret, and lots of other cheerful things like that, done which such intelligence and talent it becomes moving without being depressing. Jackie Leven 1950 - 2011 R.I.P.
