Review

"This wonderful book creates a jewel-like world of enchantment studded with Jane Ray's gold-encrusted, richly coloured drawings." The Guardian * "This is a treasury you can judge by its cover, the intricate illustrations matched by alluring, fresh interpretations of familiar tales." The Independent * "Perfect in every aspect... there is, literally and metaphorically, gold on every page. Both the stories and the pictures move the readers with unfamiliar freshness." The Sunday Times * "Berlie Doherty retells in elegant, concise, accessible modern style. Jane Ray's illustrations, luminous and otherworldly and yet passionately engaging, make each story surprising as well as familiar. This is a volume children will recall, with almost tactile pleasure, in adulthood." The Financial Times * "Text and illustrations are set, gilt-edged, against what must surely be fairy fabrics and enchanted wallpapers." Books for Keeps --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
