4.0 out of 5 stars NIKKATSU CRUELTY 5 April 2013
By Ramm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
"Fairy In A Cage" (1977) has just been given its' world DVD premiere by the Impulse/Synapse distributors as a continuation of their series of re-releases of the infamous Japanese 'Nikkatsu Studio's' line of 'Roman Porno' films. Based on a story/screenplay by the prolific Japanese fetish author: Oniroku Dan - "Fairy In A Cage" presents a pretty intense foray into S&M territory via a plot that focuses on the abuses of power and depravity purportedly perpetrated by the Japanese military during WW II against its' own citizens. The principal players in the movie include the Military Police and a corrupt/depraved senior official who jointly take a little too much personal pleasure in the 'interrogations' that they contrive. in the name of national security. to supply their torture chamber with victims, and the victims (both male & female) who fall into their clutches.

The action in this film is pretty harsh and may not be to everyone's taste - as it packs a lot of torture and bondage, brutality, & nudity into its' modest 71 min playtime. There is very little sex actually portrayed - the sexploitational elements in this one are decidedly S&M oriented. "Fairy In A Cage" is in many ways typical of other similar shocking 70's fare (such as the "Illsa" series). This genre of movies seemed to visualize the lurid stories that populated the 'Mens Magazines' of the post WW II era - that recounted tales of war atrocities (generally involving attractive women). white slavery, outlaw biker gangs, and the like. The difference between much of the sorta 'campy' USA and Euro sleaze product and the corresponding Japanese version is the grim nihilistic seriousness with which some of the Nipponese films unwind... including this one!

There is a tradition of this stark sadistic style of exploitation cinema in Japan that gives some context to "Fairy In A Cage". The so-called "Tokugawa" torture trilogy of films from the late 1960's all feature scenarios in ancient Japan of horrible abuse perpetrated by feudal rulers upon their subjects, with no restitution in sight! Innocent people get horrifically tortured to death... and that's it. Many Japanese exploitation plots end on a decidedly 'down' note - perhaps adding to their shock value. "Fairy In A Cage" follows this general precedent, but is unusual in that it depicts a more modern period of history, and atrocious acts that no government would be proud of. Given the general reticence that the Japanese political hierarchy has traditionally displayed about admitting to human rights violations during war-times - it is particularly intriguing that Nikkatsu Studios (often beleaguered by politically motivated legal actions) would choose such an audaciously revealing indictment of the Japanese military as subject matter for one of their ero-productions.

Many Japanese Pink eroflix are awash in transgressive scenarios and fetish imagery and "Fairy In A Cage" certainly ranks high amongst them. A highlight of the film is the lovely Naomi Tani who portrays the central tormented heroine of the tale with amazing aplomb and endurance as she is subjected to rigorous bondage ties and humiliations - as only the Japanese can dream them up! Ms Tani is renowned for her numerous bondage films with Nikkatsu and in this, later career, filmic effort she again looks lovely, abundantly decorated with rope, but her 'character' does not get much of an opportunity to do much more than stoically 'suffer in silence'- making this 'not' one of her best performances. This film obeys the typical (70's vintage) Japanese censorship laws regarding (not) showing genitals or explicit sex acts, but it accomplishes this via 'creative' camera angles. While this 'technique' may be a little 'maddening' to modern western viewers who are used to being able to 'see everything' (in great detail) - at least there is no. annoying. visual 'fogging' on this disk. Despite the lack of blatant graphic depictions - the 'inferred' acts are certainly 'bent' enuf to satisfy the connoisseur of same. The image transfer quality (from an original 35mm film print) is excellent (widescreen) - the (removable) English subs are good - there are no extras on the disk... but the box has the usual informative write-up on the film's background by Japanerotic film expert: Jasper Sharp.

Personally, I'm a fan of '70's-80's period' Japanese ero-weirdness and I enjoyed this movie - but would caution that it is very BDSM oriented - while not XXX it is certainly adults only material. I backed off from a full 5 Star rating primarily because I felt that there was a bit of a lack in empathy producing character development, and it WAS just SO darn grim! However, IF you (too) like such 'shocking' fare "Fairy In A Cage" is definitely worth checking out.
3.0 out of 5 stars Smart Talk On Skin: Oh Soldier, My Soldier! 17 July 2014
By E. Lee Zimmerman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
To be honest, I haven’t watched all that much S&M. I’ve seen a good handful of features exploring what I’ve called ‘the darkest of the carnal fruits,’ but I’m clearly no expert on the subject matter. However, Nikkatsu’s FAIRY IN A CAGE was a bit above what I’ve seen elsewhere. Some of that could be the setting. Some of it could be the direction. More of it is mostly likely due to the excellent production detail paid in the war-time backdrop which serves as the mechanism to bring all of these players together.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and/or characters. If you’re the type of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I’d encourage you to skip down to the last three paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you’re accepting of a few modest hints at ‘things to come,’ then read on …)

From the product packaging: “During World War II, the tyrannical Judge Murayama uses his military power to imprison and torture innocent people. Suspected of helping an anti-government movement, the lovely Namiji Kikushima is captured, along with a local kabuki actor. Helpless and unable to escape, the two are subjected to a grueling series of tortures including rope bondage and physical assault. As the Judge and his evil assistant Kayo revel in their perverse fetishes, a new military recruit they’ve hired named Taoka may be the key to the prisoners’ freedom. He loves Namiji and will do what he can to help her, even if it means betrayal to organize an escape!”

FAIRY IN A CAGE created a bit of a stir when it was first released in the late 70’s, much of which was honestly due to public scrutiny its studio – Nikkatsu – was enduring at the time. Granted, the story which flirted heavily with such topics as bondage, sex toys used as torture, and the like was provocative enough; add to that the conviction of a government bent on censoring exactly the type of story director Koyu Ohara had captured on film, and the picture was probably destined to amass a cult following in any circle.

Despite all of that hubbub, I actually found FAIRY IN A CAGE to be a bit tame. Sure, it was a handful of scenes which glorify the interrogator’s role with obvious S&M flavoring, but a few of the sequences play out like perhaps only mildly sadistic foreplay considering the depth of depravity of seen on display in lesser flicks. I mean … tickle torture? Water torture? Salves to make your loins itch? Yes, it’s S&M … but the captives’ solution managed to hit the spot! (If you’ll pardon the pun …)

From an original story by Oniroku Dan, FAIRY is actually a tale involved political corruption as much as it is illicit carnal passions. Murayama – as an interrogator – clearly has given up any inclination to behave with any measure of decorum; instead, he’s used the privilege of his political position to exploit others all for his own macabre fascination with getting others ‘to crack’ through sexual means. He’s even taken a bit of a concubine of his own, and the woman has become so enamored with his activities she’s taken them up in her zeal to service the cause. What that cause is never quite gets ironed out, but I thought Ohara did a pretty good job pointing fingers at the establishment for allowing the creation of such a police state while depicting the sexual shenanigans more as sideshow antics than legitimate art.

While the packaging implies that the soldier – Taoka – has fallen in love with the lovely damsel Namiji, that’s more than a bit of an oversimplification. Instead, he’s been won over to her charms precisely by what he’s witnessed happening to her; that’s why the first time he’s moved to self-gratification he imagines her fully bound with ropes – much as he’s come to know her – which leads him to touch himself. After he helps her escape in the big finish, he’s overcome with lust once he believes they’re free, and then the audience sees he’s only all too willing to further violate her body senselessly one bout of intercourse after another while the exhausted captive no longer has the strength to so much as resist.

FAIRY IN A CAGE (1977) is produced by Nikkatsu. DVD distribution is being handled by Impulse Pictures under the Nikkatsu Erotic Films Collection. For those needing it spelled out perfectly, this is a Japanese spoken language release with English subtitles available. (There is no English-dubbed track.) As for the technical specifications? Wow! FAIRY IN A CAGE actually looks quite good despite its age, and it is presented here in glorious full theatrical widescreen. Lastly, the only legitimate special feature here is the liner notes – an ongoing staple to these releases – provided by Japanese film scholar Jasper Sharp.

RECOMMENDED. While I found much of the film a bit narratively bizarre, FAIRY IN A CAGE certainly didn’t appear as controversial today as it was when it was first released theatrically in the late 70’s. In fact, compared to today’s standards in adult entertainment and hard-core pornography quite a bit of FAIRY is pretty tame, though no doubt some audiences will be put off by the S&M storyline. Still, nobody endures a bit of sexual torture and looks good like Naomi Tani!

In the interests of fairness, I’m pleased to disclose that the fine folks at Impulse Pictures provided me with a DVD copy of FAIRY IN A CAGE by request for the expressed purposes of completing this review; and their contribution to me in no way, shape, or form influenced my opinion of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money 13 Jun 2013
By Johann - Published on Amazon.com

This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever wasted money on. The plot is VERY thin. Basically a perverted professor lusts for a married woman and gets the army military police to arrest her so that he can have his way with her. There is some S&M which consists of some breast scenes a lot of dialogue and nothing else. The heroine protests a lot about being arrested and that takes up about 70% of the movie. The rest is some bondage scenes where a lot of rope is shown and not much else.

In the end, even though the heroine is arrested only to molest her she is killed in the most stupid way possible. So there is not even a happy ending to justify the stupidity of the plot.

Save your money.

By William H. Olds - Published on Amazon.com

I didn't know that the movie was not dubbed in English. The reviews didn't state this. This is the only problem I had with the movie otherwise it was an okay movie with plenty of nudity and sexual encounters.
