Very small book, miniscule indeed, 7x10cms or thereabouts. Excellent children's gift or if you have collecting tendencies. However, if you are interested in the skill and execution of Hockney's very fine etchings I recommend saving up for something larger. Failing that the images you can find searching the net will show you far more than these postage stamp size reproductions.

I bought this as a memento of seeing the Hockney prints exhibition in Dulwich Picture Gallery, for my daughter. One to keep and pass down as an heirloom :-)

Features you should know 3 Mar. 2010

The book is very small (3 X 4¼ inches). The print is tiny (magnifying glass almost mandatory). My only serious criticism is that the thirty-nine etchings by David Hockney are quite small; it would be nice to be able to appreciate them in a larger format. The cover (as shown) appears to be leather, but I can't tell for sure. My copy is in English, so there IS an edition with English text. It's a handsome little gift book, very rare. Just be aware of what you're plunking down hundreds of $$$ for.

I was replacing a copy of this that was a gift and found it for a far more reasonable price than it appears at often. The Hockney etchings are as mesmerizing as ever, but in the appendix I found a listing of variations among the printings in the artwork. The stories are dark and you need a nice magnifying glass to crack the spine on this for reading but I am thrilled to replace its tiny empty space on my bookshelf next to the other mini tomes, albeit a slightly different version.
