Product Description

Product Description
'Every weekend, thousands of otherwise rational men and women are cursing, kicking at divots and smashing expensively milled putters against the trunks of immovable hardwood trees. These players go home in a toxic funk to inflict gloom upon their loved ones until the following Saturday, when they rush back to the golf course and do it all over again.' In the summer of 2005, Carl Hiaasen picked up a golf club again for the first time in 32 years. He was not the best of players in 1973, and had certainly not got any younger in the intervening period. Undeterred, and weighed down by an increasing quantity of golf equipment and game-enhancing products acquired from adverts on "The Golf Channel", who can see a sucker coming, Carl was soon hacking and shanking his way around the courses of Florida, and his obsession with the sport was rekindled. Animals were harmed during the making of this book.Over the course of the next 18 months, Carl's game got better, then worse, then slightly better, then much worse again, and he even managed to jinx Tiger Woods. On the way to finally summoning up the courage to compete in an actual tournament himself, Carl details the hilarious consequences of his misguided belief that he could actually play the game. We also learn that Justin Timberlake has a better golf handicap (6) than Bob Dylan (17), that Eagle Trace golf course contains not one trace of an eagle, and that Mind Drive capsules are not necessarily a good idea. But through all the misery and frustration (save the odd glorious shot), golf took up residence in Carl's heart again. "Fairway to Hell" is the ultimate tale of the trials and tribulations of the amateur golfer, but also the heart-warming story of how the game brought together the generations of the Hiaasen family.

From the Inside Flap
In the summer of 2005, Carl Hiaasen picked up a golf club again for the first time in thirty-two years. He was not the best of players in 1973, and the intervening decades had not been kind to his physique. Undeterred, and weighed down by an increasing accumulation of golf gadgetry acquired from unscrupulous corporations who can see a sucker coming, Carl was soon shanking his way around the courses of Florida, and his obsession with the sport was rekindled.

Fairway to Hell is the hilarious account of Carl Hiaasen’s love-hate relationship with unruly drivers, temperamental putters and all the many hazards of the golf course – local wildlife included. Animals were, unfortunately, harmed during the making of this book. In the course of the next eighteen months, Carl’s game got better, then worse, then slightly better, then much worse again. He succeeded in drowning a golf cart in a pond, and even managed to jinx Tiger Woods.

By the time he finally summoned up the courage to compete in an actual tournament, casting aside the damage to his self-esteem, Carl realized that he was part of one big golfing family. Fairway to Hell is the ultimate tale of the trials and tribulations of the amateur golfer, and quite simply the funniest golf memoir ever written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairway To Laughter, 8 Sep 2008
By B. Cooper (england) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First of all it needs to be noted this is not a new novel by Carl Hiaasen - instead this is the autobiographical tale of Mr. Hiaasen's return to the game of golf after a 30 year time-out.

Second point is that I have no more than a passing knowledge of golf and do not play the game but still greatly enjoyed the book.

Thirdly, and most importantly, this book made me laugh out loud more than any other book I've ever read.

The story goes that Mr. Hiaasen played golf in his youth to get closer to his father but was never any good, when his father dies at a tragically young age he gives up the game, only years later does he give it another shot. This book is partly his reflections on that decision and partly the journal he kept over a couple of very stressful years.

Trying every training method, mechanical aid, herbal remedy and superstition he can find Mr. Hiassen attempts to remedy his ailing game in time for a tournament at his local course.

This book contains all of Hiaasen's trademark humour and outlandishness but relates them to his real life which only serves to make it funnier.

Suffice it to say the chapter entitled 'Monkey Golf' nearly cost me my marriage as I was laughing so hard I woke up my wife.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to laugh, golfer or not, but do suggest you dont read it in bed!

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning, 22 Dec 2008

If you enjoyed reading this book, don't be tempted to buy Hiaasen's "The Downhill Lie". It's the same book!

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing, 10 Oct 2008
By Karlis Streips (Riga, Latvia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought the book because Carl Hiaasen wrote it, and I have absolutely adored everything the man has ever written, both newspaper columns and hilarious, hilarious novels. This book, however, should come with a warning label: "Don't attempt if you're not really, really, really interested in golf." I'm not, and so the book was really quite a bit less than interesting to me. Crisply written, as always, but not really all that funny, and lots and lots and lots of golf. Be warned.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy expecting his normal humour!
I must admit I was dissapointed by this book. It wasn't one of Hiaasen's typical crime comedy stories, rather a story about his love and hate of golf. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Who Cares About Golf?
You don't have to like golf, or even know about it, to enjoy this book. All you have to do is enjoy the writing style and view of life that Carl Hiaasen has. Read more
