Review

"By the time I put the book down I was already anticipating the further adventures of the Fairest fables. Willingham's love for these characters is a abundantly clear and palpable on every page." boingboing.com "This is a different, more fantastical take on the characters of the Fable setting, with little to no interactions with the modern world, instead a more imaginative approach to recreating the fantasy at the heart of the tales that inspired the setting. Jimenez s detailed art is fittingly gorgeous and gives the magic all the grandeur it deserves. "Publishers Weekly" Praise for Bill Willingham's Fables: "Wonderful." "LA City Beat" "The best comic book currently being produced" "IGN""

Having really enjoyed Fairest vol 1 and a huge fan of the Fables series I had to get this, it's not as good story wise and a sometimes confusing read. It's basically the story of Rapunzel searching for her lost children in Japan and tells of her life in feudal Japan centuries earlier in flashbacks, the art is quite good and we are introduced to a new set of fables and Rapunzel's former love....What really made the book for me is the backup story about Reynard the fox illustrated by Barry Kitson I can honestly say I am not a fan of his work but was surprised how well illustrated the story is...if you are a completist of Fables like me buy it, but if not your not missing much apart from the excellent Reynard tale.I've only given three stars as it's not essential reading and does not spoil the
enjoyment of the Fables books.

Volume 2 of Fairest follows Rapunzel's back story in the Fables world, from her original life in the Hidden Kingdom of Japanese myth, to the electric streets of modern Tokyo and the Fable Yakuza.

The artwork is beautiful and the storyline is engaging (although sometimes a little confusing as you jump between characters and timelines, and if you don't know Japanese legend well, some of the characters may get lost on you.)

A must for all Fables fans.

I did consider not bothering with this spin off series as it was easy to assume they were just going through the motions to cash in on the success of Fables. I was wrong, the new series enables fresh plots and strong characters. The graphics of course are excellent.
