All with an interest in British 18th Century popular music owe a debt of gratitude to Peter Holman in this fine production. I found the setting of the pieces in their original music not only hugely enjoyable but also very instructive. Catherine Bott and Joseph Cornwell have voices ideally suited to the period, and the Parley of Instruments are an absolute pleasure. There remain a great many songs that could have been included, and I eagerly await further releases by the same team. Can we pursuade Peter Holman?

The main enjoyment I found was hearing these songs performed in their original versions - as far as we can tell. There are some super songs in an English tradition we should be proud of.

I wish there were more recordings of 18th century English popular songs. So many of them have interesting words and lovely singable tunes, but for some reason they seem to be almost ignored. I was pleased to find this CD,it is a bit old now. The Parley of Instruments are lively and the singing is lively and fun, although just a little bit on the "posh" side for the music. I wish I could find more like this.
