I wouldn't previously have associated Barbara Bonney with 16th and 17th century English music, but as this her latest gem of a disc reveals, she is totally at home in the repertoire. Ms Bonney's lovely clear voice is ideally suited to the intimate style of this music and, for me, she captures the poetry, subtlety and contrasting moods of the songs beautifully.
With sensitive accompaniment, some enjoyable instrumental numbers, excellent sound quality and generous CD notes (including the full text of the songs in three languages), what more can I say about this disc? - except buy it.

I don't normally go in for this kind of statement, but this CD is the best song recital album I've heard in over thirty years. It has to be a candidate for CD of the decade, and is by far the best thing BB has put on disc. I'm not as keen on the instrumental tracks as others - simply because they prevent hearing more of BB - but there is no dud on the album, every track is no less than very good at the least, while BB's contribution is simply dazzling. It's nonsense to talk of degrees of perfection, but that is the experience of listening to this CD for the first time - the first track is perfect, but the second is even better, and so it goes on through the album, reaching an astonishing climax, for me, with 'She loves, and she confesses too'. I was tingling when I first heard this, and just kept on playing it, Purcell's response to the text is a work of genius and BB's delivery does it full justice (check out Sarah Gritton's version - it's very good but not in the same league as this). I really wish BB would record more of this repertoire as it suits her voice to perfection.

A CD full of wonderful singing by an artiste whose voice suits the songs. The lute accompaniment could, I think, be a little more prominent. The instrumental groups are very good, too.

Beware, though! If you are looking for music to cheer you up, this CD may not do so! Nearly all the songs are melancholic a la Dowland (four are by him). There is some relief with cheerful items by Byrd (Though Amaryllis Dance in Green), Morley (It Was a Lover and His Lass)and Purcell (Fairest Isle). It is a pity that Ms Bonney did not include more items of the happier kind.

These comments should, however, not deter you; this is a CD not to be missed by all lovers of the music of this period.
