5.0 out of 5 stars My Favourite Lady 26 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is definitely my favourite show! Suave Rex Harrison, wonderful Julie Andrews and a host of other marvellous characters! My old LP record, bought more than thirty years ago, was damaged and I decided I couldn't be without it. As an added bonus, the CD has archived interviews with the stars made just after the recording session had finished.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to catch up with 30 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
The CD is as clear and sharp as one might hope for with interviews at the end after what is claimed to be a fourteen hour stint in the recording studios. Harrison was aged 35 and Andrews only 20 at the time of the recording. It makes one realise just how old one is becoming!

This is an absolute classic set and every jazz lover should have it in their collection. I first heard this when I was ten years old and I liked it even then - it was the first jazz album I had ever heard (that's about fifty five years ago) and I reckon I could whistle every note in perfect synch with the three stars.

This music is as close to perfection as makes no difference. Previn is excellent, showing great taste and swing; Shelly Manne performs as only he can with wit, sensitivity and musicality; Leroy Vinegar gives a stunning performance on bass - together the amalgam is superlative.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original cast was always the best 25 Sep 2013

Having heard the LP many many times in my youth, I decided I had to have a digital copy when I throw away my record player. This is a faithful copy of the original and a real classic stage musical.

Different from the Rex Harrison version, but very good and enjoyable. Ian Richardson has a remarkable voice and makes an excellent Higgins

This is the original sound track from the 1950s, if you are a lover of shows from that era then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something's gone wrong here 30 Dec 2013
By Bacchus TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Many of the reviews here do not seem to be about this recording conducted by John Owen Edwards but about other recordings.

To redress the balance, I am submitting this review to give potential purchasers an idea of what they are likely to get.

This is is a 2 CD recording of all the music [and some bits of spoken dialogue] from the soundtrack of My Fair Lady. Alec McCowen is a wonderfully crusty creation as Henry Higgins. He also sings beautifully. Tinuke Olafimihan has a lovely voice and conveys both the cockney and the posh Eliza Doolittle very well [although her spoken cockney accent does veer into West Country at times]. I think Bob Hoskins is a bit shouty as Alfred Doolittle [not as interesting a character as Stanley Holloway made him]. Henry Wickham is also a very good Freddy. I have really enjoyed all their contributions.

The thing I love about this recording is the wide ranging recorded sound and the fantastic sound of the orchestra - its a real treat to listen to. You also get lots more music from the piece including 'Come to the Ball' sung by Alec McCowen to a piano accompaniment. This was the original title of the musical.

So, well worth hearing.
