Review

If you've been nervous about taking the plunge into stranded colourwork, this is the perfect introduction. With 11 designs, this has minimal instruction but focuses on starting small and building up to more involved projects. Our favourite designs include the stunning Eileann scarflette and mitts.-The Knitter

Product Description

In Fair Isle Basics and Beyond, you'll discover 17 projects that incorporate a variation of Fair Isle and contemporary stranded colorwork applications. We've assembled a collection of stylish accessory designs to help you get your bearings. In First Things First, try your hand on some simple two-color approaches using chunky and worsted weight yarns. Then, when you're ready to spread your wings, you can test your skills on the projects in Second Steps, which expands into using some lighter gauge yarns, and incorporating up to five colors with detailed color charts. The variety of projects in Fair Isle Basics and Beyond will continually hone your color working skills, and keep your family and friends toasty warm in the winter months ahead! If special techniques are included in this book, please list in detail: Fair Isle Knitting: Fair Isle knitting is a traditional technique used to create patterns consisting of multiple colors. Traditional Fair Isle patterns use a variety of colors and shades, using only two colors per row, and are generally knitted in the round, without the use of the purl stitch. In traditional Fair Isle knitting there are always two available active colors of yarn at a time; one is used to create the knit stitch, and the other is carried loosely behind the work. Fair Isle patterns can use up to 5 stitches of one color at a time because too many stitches of the same color will leave a very long strand of carried yarn.

two colour knitting 7 Dec 2011
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I really love fair-isle and this book does not have the true fair-isle complicated patterns of the Shetlands. It has 17 very accessible patterns to those starting out in fair isle. It sticks to no more than two colours in a row at any one time, so the pattens are not that advanced. Most are attractive and concentrate on gloves, scarves and hats. As always, good production on these books and clear instructions with a basics in knitting and a small section on stranding yarns across the back of the work - all you need for this kind of two colour knitting. It's not my favourite fair-isle book but I did like the patterns. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's yarnsandfabrics blog.

Disappointing 1 Nov 2011
By Dizzy - Published on Amazon.com

this book is not worth the money. the title is very misleading. I thought it was about the basics of Fair Isle knitting-something for a beginner, but all it has is patterns-no instructions. You need to be an accomplished knitter to use the book. And for the price, i thought it would have a lot more to offer.
All though the patterns are alright-nothing stands out. There are definitely better books out there for the money. I will do lot more research before spending so much money for nothing.

Lovely patterns 20 Nov 2011
By P. Woods - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While this is not an instruction book on how to do fair isle knitting, it is a book with easy to do patterns. A couple of pages with how-to's on fair isle would have been nice.
That being said, I love this book and the patterns within. There are patterns for the beginning fair isle knitter as well as intermediates. For the experienced knitter, they are fun and quick knits. The layout and photos in the book are very good. Pattern instructions are well written. I'm currently knitting the scarf and mitts on the cover and they are gorgeous. In my opinion, an adventurous beginning fair isle knitter would have no trouble with this pattern. It's a fun and interesting knit.
Learn to knit fair isle from your local yarn shop or a different book, then consider the pretty and easy patterns in this book.

I really like this book. I hesitated because I thought it was a bit pricey. I purchased it anyway and I believe it is a great addition to my library.
