Product Description

CD Description

Since his tragic death in 1991 Peter Bellamy has achieved something akin to cult status on the folk scene. As The Independent put it, " the most individual and prolific voice of the second generation of folk revivalists who followed in the pioneer footsteps of Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd". Following the demise of the equally iconic Young Tradition, Peter launched himself on a solo career. This double CD for the price of one is made up of his first three solo albums dating from 1968 and 1969: Mainly Norfolk, Fair England’s Shore and The Fox Jumps Over the Parson’s Gate. Even at that early stage Peter was revealing a very highly distinctive vocal style, based on the traditional East Anglian singers, Sam Larner and Harry Cox. This collection also serves as a marvellous introduction to English traditional songs as Peter had a repertoire which was always varied and contained classics of the genre. Disc 1: The German Musicianer / Georgie / Lovely Joan / The 14th Of February / The Shooting Of His Dear / The Saucy Sailor / Yarmouth Town / Just As The Tide Was A-Flowing / Fakenham Fair / The Lofty Tall Ship / Butter & Cheese & All / The Turtle Dove / Young Roger Esq / Fanny Blair / Long Pegging Awl / The Good Luck Ship / The Green Bed / All Around My Hat / The Dockyard Gate / The ‘Prentice Boy / The Dogger Bank / The Dark-Eyed Sailor / Young Gentlemen Of England / Jolly Roving Tar. Disc 2: The Spotted Cow / Two Pretty Boys (The Two Brothers) / The Female Drummer / Here’s Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy / The Ghost Song (The Cruel Ship’s Carpenter) / The Carnal And The Crane / The Little Black Horse (The Penny Wager) / The Barley And The Rye / The Turkish Lady / Warlike Seamen (The Irish Captain) / The Blackberry Fold / Saint Stephen / The Rigs Of London Town / The Fox Jumps Over The Parson’s Gate.

Fellside must be the masters of under-self-hype, because by the look of it this is simply a CD reissue of Peter Bellamy's rare 1968 solo album "Fair England's Shore". Well, it's a lot more than that. On their own website the label advertise it as a double CD for the price of a single disc issue. Well, again, it's more than that. In fact, what you get here are THREE extremly rare vinyl albums stuck on to two CDs. The albums are, apart from the above, "Mainly Norfolk" (also from 1968) and 1969's "The Fox Jumped Over The Parson's Gate". An awful lot of collectors of the English folk revival would jump over an awful lot more than the parson's gate to get hold of this music! Since it's mostly just Peter "the Singing Crumhorn" Bellamy belching out these amazing songs on his own, occasionally accompanied by one other instrument or harmony voice, it's nice to have on CD (yes, I know about the lifelessness of that medium, but listen: no crackles and inner groove distortion, which seems to be particularly pronounced with Bellamy's sharp and piercing voice - and where would you ever find the vinyl anyway - and do you have a fortune to spare?). In fact the sound here, which was probably not the most professionally recorded in the first place, is quite good, not too digital, and seemingly taken from the original master tapes. On top of all that, fiddle genius Barry Dransfield appears on some of the tracks on Disc 2. Now, that's pretty good value for around eight quid I would say.

English Folk Music 26 April 2011

After leaving the wonderful folk group "The Young Tradition", Peter Bellamy began recording as a solo artist. This magnificent double CD release combines the first three albums on one release. We get the album "Mainly Norfolk" and "Fair England's Shore", both originally recorded and released in 1968. Both of these albums make up Disc one. We also get the album "The fox jumped over the Parson's gate" recorded and released in 1968. All of the tracks are in their original running order and the sound re mastering is excellent. Peter went on to record much more traditional English music and even composed his own Folk concept projects. He tragically died in 1991 after committing suicide. This release is a great package of a important stage in his Folk music career.
All of the pieces are Traditional English folk songs and tunes. Peter gives a warm, passionate and intense performance of these songs with much focus and strong feeling. He performs most of the songs with just his voice and sometimes the Concertina. There is assistance on some tracks from Barry Dransfield from the Dransfields on Fiddle and Chris Birch gives harmony vocal support.
Peter Bellamy's first solo album "Mainly Norfolk" (1968) indicated his desire to promote the folk music of his part of England. It drew heavily on the repertoire of singer Harry Cox, still alive at that time, who was the most famous traditional singer of Norfolk songs. On the album, Bellamy sang all songs unaccompanied. By the time of the second and third albums he draws from English folk songs from various sources such as Cecil Sharp collected folk songs, East Anglia fishing community and the Vaughan Williams memorial library at Cecil Sharp house, but he still gets insperation from singer Harry Cox. For example there is the original version of "All around my hat" a tradtional folk song made famous by Steeleye Span with their re worked folk Rock version from 1975. (There are other songs on this collection that Steeleye later recorded)
The third album, "The fox jumped over the Parson`s gate" begins with "Spotted Cow" a splendid song that has appeared all over England. There are other songs that depict stories about brothers falling out, Girls in the Army, The life of a sailor, The supernatural, a black horse, pirate tales, Saint Stephen and a fox in the title song "The fox jumped over the Parson` gate",

This is an excellent release full of rich texture with some great Traditional English Folk songs performed exptertly and masterly by Peter Bellamy. It is a great record of English Tradition and an important part of our heritage.

The best of Bellamy 15 Mar 2012

It seems that only now, long after his passing, that Pete Bellamy is receiving the recognition he truly deserves. This double album is a real collectors' item and is a must for those who really want to get to grips with their true folk roots. One for the connoisseur.
