Product Description

Product Description

.... the shocking and spirited sequel to the much-praised ‘Empty Chairs’.

Life on the streets of Sydney was preferable to the nightmare Stacey Danson had survived in the hell that was home.

She hit the streets running at the age of eleven, and armed with a flick-knife and a fierce determination to live a different life, she began the journey from the 1960s to today.

For those that came to know ‘Sassy girl’ in 'Empty Chairs', and for those caring people that asked how her life worked out from there, 'Faint Echoes of Laughter' continues the story.

For those that haven’t met her yet, this book stands alone as a tribute to the kindness of strangers, the loyalty of true friendships and the way things really are on the streets of any town .... anytime.

I, like everyone else who has reviewed it, found this book very moving, and so completely honest. Stacey Danson has a rare gift of description; she brings places to life in very few words. But her ability to share emotions is even more striking, and in fact it left me breathless. It's a while since I read Empty Chairs - I'd forgotten how good this writer is at this sort of thing.
Ms. Danson plunges straight into the story and suddenly we are right there in the damaged container in the docks with her, meeting Momma and Cassie and Jamie and Baby Jenny and herself, 'Sassy.' All these characters emerge so deftly and subtly that it seems we have known them for a long time and understand them fully. This was one book which I couldn't stop reading - I had to read on, to hear how they coped with Momma's baby, to find out what happened next to these brave children whose independence was so impressive, and who lived together as so much more of a family than most real families, looking after and caring for each other. Ms. Danson's courage in writing this has produced a book which is in a class of its own. Her courage and her writing ability both deserve the highest praise.

This is the follow of to her first publication Empty ChairsIn the first book we see how Stacey ran away at the age of 11, her mother selling her for sexual gratification. She was physically hurt so many times and so many times hidden in a dark place which remained with her right up to today.

This publication follows her life from then. It opens up explaining that a lot of people were asking about her now. This 2nd book had me laughing in places with her strong determination and her sense of humour when learning how to become an 'office' worker at the library with one of the people she trusted there, who worked there. She acted like a guardian for Stacey in my mind. I won't delve into the story too much but to say how she 'picked herself up, brushed herself off' would be an understatement, the sheer determination of character of this lady never ceased to astound me, it was a make me or break me kind of attitude and she chose to make it! To think that she was married for such a long time but found the physical intimate part restrictive because of her experiences was sad, I can see she felt a lot for her ex husband and that made me cry. 27 yrs is a long time to be married.

The pains she went through with her tummy every so often had my tummy in knots, Stacey makes you live with her right at the times of running away at the age of 11, sitting at a cafe drinking coffee, talking to different characters, brought it all to life. I lived and felt alongside her.

The open emotions she gave out in the book at the end left me in tears, tears for what she had to endure, tears for a lost happy childhood that all of us deserve, loss of friends, decent family. The need to be loved, the need to be embraced without fear. The people she became close to at the end, who died, that made me worse, I burst into tears. Stacey.........I am so glad you made it and went on to have a lovely daughter. I'm so sorry you had to go through what you went through.

It could have made you a bad mom, it made you a better one. An understanding one, I am sorry your marriage ended, but happy that you are settled in your life now.

These men and women [I'm being polite here] who use these kids in such a way...........words cannot be printed on this screen, there is no justifying what they do, and although Stacey has to live on the streets at such a young age, she learnt, she progressed and she was out of the hell. In another sort of hell, that no child deserves.

Well written and takes you walking right alongside her, really felt that I knew this lady by the time I finished the book, felt every stab of pain and every sort of emotion.
