I've just had to RMA my WD Caviar Green despite being only 6 months old. Looking at the forums on the net, it seems there may be an issue with Load Cycle on this drives. To conserve power, in simplistic terms, the heads apparently park themselves after 8 seconds of drive inactivity. This contributes to a lifetime's volume of Load Cycles within 6-12 months of normal drive use, and subsequent drive failure.
Mine started with disk checks on boot, unreadable sectors and files. Unfortunately, I didn't get a replacement in time to salvage the data, and it died last weekend (PC built Oct-11), ~5 months old. After rebuilding the OS on a new 2Tb WD Caviar Black, I found that Windows 7 couldn't even mount the old drive.
Anyone else had their Caviar Green fail? I notice many of the positive reviews here are in the last 6 months...
nope being use one for 3 years and 2 for 2 years. but not as a boot disk. Green labels are not intend for OS only for storage. WD blue drives are good for OS. had one in my old pc for 5 yrs with no issues.
