Product Description

Review

'This enchanting book explores the realm of elves, pixies, leprechauns, dryads and other mythical creatures. Nearly 200 extraordinary drawings and full-colour paintings combine to produce a book which has stood the test of time since it was first published.' Kindred Sprit on Faeries --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

A flight of fancy for readers of all ages, this book explores a whole new world charged with the wild beauty of creatures who do not live by human rules. Theirs is a realm of wonder, joy and enchanted danger. The two artists who created this book, Alan Lee and Brian Froud, have studied faerie history, myths, legends and folklore, and embodied their findings in 185 paintings and drawings. All the faerie types are identified and pictured - water faeries, elves, gnomes, pixies, leprechauns, tree faeries, dryads and more. Information on their favourite haunts, pastimes and ways of life are drawn from Celtic stories, oral tradition and from writers and poets. Among these sources are "The Ballad of Thomas the Rhymer", the great poet W.B. Yeats' "The Song of Wandering Aengus", and Christina Rossetti's poem "Goblin Market". Folk stories are traced to their origins, retold and illustrated.

This book begins with text written by artists Brian Froud and Alan Lee explaining why they love faeries and drawing them and other wee folk. Then there is the mythology side of it which gives us some background and understanding, all this text is surrounded by wonderful little drawings. The rest of the book then displays gorgeous work by both artists along with quirky little explanations of each drawing. If you love faeries you will love this book.

Another masterpiece from Brian Froud and Alan lee.
This book is an explination into the wonderful world of faries,
I have purchased many books on faries and some by Brian Froud , but this one it the best yet. It introduces you to the fairy world in a way that captures you forever. The book is bursting with the most amazing art, from sketches to paintings, all vervibrant and alive with emotion and passion.
My children also got so much enjoyment from it, It as with other Brian Froud works looks at both sides of the fairy world, not just the good but the naughty, medling elves and pixies.
I highly recomend this book for all ages and not just fairy enthusiasts, I know this could be enjoyed by all.

Lovely pictures
A great book for adults - agree previous comments that it's not really a child's book. Particularly loved Alan Lee's artwork. Walking in the woods will never be the same!

Wonderful art work...if a little scarey in places!
I only knock one star off this brilliant collection of artwork because some of the images are gruesome and that doesn't quite fit with my own image of faeries! Read more
