Book Description

What binds a man and wife together when the hate they share for each other is as powerful as their love? When their lives are forever overshadowed by a terrible secret that threatens to tear the marriage apart?
Joe and Florrie Pomfret must put aside their dreams and make it work.

Faded Dreams, a raw family saga set in an East Lancashire mill-town during the first half of the 20th Century, follows the turbulent lives of the working-class Joe and Florrie.

Joe is hard-drinking, volatile and uncouth on one hand, a loving family man on the other. His fundamental kindness and wicked sense of humour contrast vividly with his explosive fits of rage and heartless behaviour; both sides have a life-long effect on his children.

Florrrie is haunted by memories of her parents' unhappy marriage and fears that history will repeat itself. She matches Joe's drinking and flirting and is strong-willed enough to confront him and his uncontrollable temper, often at the expense of her children's emotional needs.

Throughout the Second World War, and for many years afterward, Joe's ability to conjure hilarity and mayhem out of mundane events ensures that, regardless of the crisis, the family shares a smile for every tear shed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read 15 July 2012

The author gallops through a few decades of history set against the richly painted canvas of a North-West town. The story is driven along in an effective biopic style focusing on the personalities of two central charaters.

Faded Dreams isn't about twists or intrigue but far more earthy plot elements, human drama and tragedy, overlaid by the comedy of life. Without a doubt this works.

Well worth giving this novel a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book! what a bargain! 23 Jun. 2012

For those of you who enjoy authors such as Josephine Cox, Dee Williams etc. then this is a book for you. It follows the ups and downs of a Lancashire family from the war years and onwards. It covers, poverty, alcoholism, violence, and unmarried motherhood in the 50's to name but a few but what shines through is a family strongly bound by love for each other. This book made me cry but at times is hilariously funny,no complicated plots to follow just a really good book to get into a comfy chair with and forget about the rain outside. What a bargain!!. Many thanks to the author

I was so pleased with this book. It has just about everything to make a good story. I like the realism of the characters as they are portrayed warts and all in a very direct way that kept me reading. Joe Pomfret is a charming character but has his faults like everyone else. The relationship between him and his wife Florrie goes through many changes and both characters make mistakes and live with them, some rather uncomfortably. Having been married for more than twenty years I can really relate to the couple's ups and downs. I have been able to see a real picture in my mind as the story unfolds and have been impressed by the author's descriptions and portrayals of wartime Britain. The author writes dialogue with genuine knowledge of the regional accents and I can almost hear the characters speaking and this is a particular strength in this novel. The story takes us through several decades and keeps straight to the point without long and pointless descriptive passages that I admit I often skip through in some books. A great read, I will look forward to reading more from this author.

A good and easy flowing read. It is a bit predictable, not a great literary work but worth reading nevertheless.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel - it follows the trials and tribulations of one family - the ups and downs of Florrie and Joe the parents bringing up their young family through the decades. You will laugh and cry reading this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars all human life is here 16 Oct. 2012

I first downloaded the free sample onto my kindle as I was unsure about the book but very soon got involved in the characters of Joe and Florrie and the turbulent life they lead and bought the full book. I am glad I did, it is gritty but heart rendering at times, it was hard to reconcile what would certainly be regarded as severe child abuse today. However it was impossible to dislike either Joe or Florrie as they so clearly loved the children in their own way and fought tooth and nail for them although perhaps not always in the right way. It is rare that I read a novel more than once but I feel certain that this will be an exception
