Found this book in a collection of hand me downs I received. Printed in1975 I at first put it aside as it was rather battered and unappealing andsci-fi is not my usual reading. Looks can be deceiving as this book ( taken up by chance recently) proved. The author has cleverly interwoven the international power struggle of the mid twentieth century with the coming of the unknown. I found the storyline bogged down at times in the moralistic arguements of decision making of the " powers to be", but the timeframe of the story resurrected the plot when needed. The ending left me searching the web for more tilley.!

Read this 30 years ago and it is just as good as the day I turned that first page all those years ago. Excellent and gripping story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rediscover what I think is a classic 11 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I recently found my paperback copy of this book in my attic.
I ended up spending a weekend rediscovering it.

I originally read it in 1982, when the Cold War was reaching a warmer period. There are many books that have looked at the premise of society collapse and an alien invasion, but here it is woven together in a storyline I have not seen replicated.

I always wanted this to be made into a film, but like so many good books, it never happened.

If you enjoy dystopian science fiction, then I suggest you read it.
When I revisit Asimov, Greg Bear and others, their writing still stands up, despite the passage of time since they were published. In my opinion this book achieves that status.

good old science fiction story, with lot of cold war details used to great effect in it. typical yankee stuff, and a good ending

3.0 out of 5 stars Schlocky fun 10 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Has Dan Brown's knack with a nicely crafted sentence, and is also a bit heavy on the acronyms and lengthy military installation names...but it nips along quite nicely and has some interesting stuff to say.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book. 7 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is one of the best science fiction novels i have ever read. It tells a frightening tale of aliens making first contact with the human race and shows how quickly things can escalate when people do not work together. There is only one amazingly bad thing about this novel but then you are going to have to read it to find out what it is :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 20 Dec 2012
One of the best most credible science fiction books you will ever read. No screaming jagged toothed monsters here but a feeling on increasing helplessness when confronted with a superior race. Excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a book! 11 May 2005
I loved this book. I have read it twice now and I'm sure I'll be reading it again very soon. Tilley has written this book extremely well and has made me want to read more of his work. Not the most fast paced book in the world, although you may disagree, but every page entices you to keep turning and turning. I lost a lot of sleep to this book for that very reason. It really makes you think about life, human relations, and the world in general. My, My, what we take for granted. I would thoroughly recommend this book even for people who wouldn't normally read sci-fi type stuff!
