Okay, you knew everyone in high school was just a little different: everyone looked at you strangely, the teachers were freaky, and you never could find the right groove to fit into. What if it turned out that it was all because your school was inhabited by creepy aliens from outer space? That's the enjoyably cheesy B-premise for this fun and scary flick from the pen of Scream's Kevin Williamson, the master of the post-modern teen horror film. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), it's The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as six disparate students from Herrington High School band together when they discover that an alien life form is invading both the student and faculty bodies, with plans to take over the world.

Each of the heroes represents a different high school type: popular babe (Jordana Brewster), picked-on geek (Elijah Wood), goth girl (Clea DuVall), sensitive jock (Shawn Hatosy), new kid in town (Laura Harris), and bad-boy rebel (Josh Hartnett). The plot isn't much--a basic kill-or-be-killed premise spiked with a healthy shot of paranoia--but Willliamson and Rodriguez do a great job of building the tension slowly but surely. The suspense set pieces are genuinely frightening, and the film pokes fun at itself without deflating its scares; Williamson is a master at shifting gears from comedy to horror quickly and adroitly. The young cast doesn't have a weak link among them (with special kudos to Wood, DuVall and heartthrob-in-the-making Hartnett), and Rodriguez gets maximum mileage from the titular faculty, which includes Jon Stewart, Piper Laurie, Salma Hayek, Bebe Neuwirth, and Robert Patrick of Terminator 2. Go to the head of the class, Mr. Williamson. --Mark Englehart

4.0 out of 5 stars The teachers are strangely dehydrated ! 16 July 2003
Format:VHS Tape
A pleasantly enjoyable alien invasion movie which pits the wits of a rapidly-shrinking group of high schoolers against a rapidly-growing group of water-loving alien monsters.
Plot-wise, there's not much new: 'Something's not quite right at school' is the theme that takes up most of the film, with the usual disbelieved teenagers trying to warn their parents of the danger amongst them.
Certain parts of the film are full of holes; the courageous tactic used by the kids to dispose of the aliens seems slightly ridiculous and the usual character mold of the over-sexed, dentally perfect, highschool students being pursued by something evil, puts the film in Cliché Land.
However, 'The Faculty' works well through convincing special effects, one or two surprises and the intrigue of not knowing who is human and who is alien. Reminiscent of several better films, such as 'The Thing', it fails in atmospherics but makes up its losses with a very impressive twist near the end.
Look out for a young Josh Hartnett who went on to star in 'Pearl Harbor' and an even younger Elijah Wood, who was to become internationally famous as Frodo Baggins in 'The Lord of The Rings'.
Overall, 'The Faculty' is very watchable; not destined for the Horror Hall of Fame but something which could easily make it to your video shelf, to be watched again and again.
This is a movie for fans of furtive alien takeovers of the 'Body Snatchers' kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-see! 29 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This film, although, I'll admit, the storyline has been done in different formats many a time, has all the ingredients for a major Hollywood blockbuster. Outstanding performances from Eljah Wood(the timid high-school misfit), Clea DuVall(goth) and Josh Harnett(bad boy rebel). The script was grippingly written, filled with suspense, action, wisecracks and a suprising twist to the end. Good, solid entertainment!

4.0 out of 5 stars "Aliens Have Taken Over the f*****g School!" 17 April 2012
By Tim Kidner TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
This smart, cool slice of college hokum from director Robert Rodriguez is fun, brisk and has a recognisable cast - Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Famke Janssen, Salma Hayek and even an almost unrecognisable Jon Stewart (the daily satirical U.S show host).

There's tons of knowing campus black humour, a weirdly eclectic group of students and an even weirder bunch of teachers. They start to go completely whacko and doing all sorts of strange stuff. Before long the adults have strange powers - but the kids are smarter!

It's quite involving, has some great special effects and is a nice mixture of sci-fi and college drama, with an acerbic and often wicked, bitchy script.

Another great movie from Robert Rodriguez!

4.0 out of 5 stars A cast of great actors 10 Aug 2010
By Rebecca
Format:DVD
A cast of great actors , some of which have gone onto much bigger and better things help to make this film incredibly entertaining!
The cast includes Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbour) , Elijah Wood (LOTR) , Famke Jannsen (X-Men) , Robert Patrick (T2) , Jordanna Brewster (Fast & The Furious) and even a cameo role for RnB star USHER!!!!
The cast deliver some very believable performances in what should theoretically be a very far fetched storyline! A school faculty become taken over by aliens and slowly this spreads throughout the school and the town , it is down to a few students to save the whole school before they can spread the mayhem further! It does sound far fetched and a bit silly but in all honesty this is well worth a watch , if only to see some of these actors in there younger days and see how they have blossomed into such good actors getting some major starring roles!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 5 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I thought the Faculty was absolutely brilliant. I'm not really into alien films myself, but I loved this! Elijah Wood was particularly good in it I thought, along with Josh Hartnett. It's a film you can watch over and over again, and can never get tired of it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci fi comedy with a brillient cast 26 Jan 2002
Format:VHS Tape
I began watching this film on DVD thinking that it was going to be boring and scary. To tell you the truth I only watched it because Elijah Wood was in it of who I am I great fan and he didn't dissapoint!

I would recomend that you watch it on DVD with the subtitles up because some of the funniest lines are barly audible!
Not scary at all, maybe a bit disgusting at parts but soooooo funny, especially Casey (Wood) watch out for the bit in Zekes house its hilerious.

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty decent 31 Oct 2006
By sean paul mccann VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
the faculty tells the story of a high school that has been invaded by aliens and one by one staff and pupil get infected and while they retain their human personna are not quite the same as they were, all of the invasion is going to plan except for 6 misfits who resist the invasion and work out that something isnt right with the people that they once knew.starring hollywoods bright young hopes at the time in josh hartnett and elijah wood faculty is an entertaining film that even has a little twist to keep things interesting, while the script is weak at times the drama is fast paced and there is enough blood and kills to keep any gore fan ticking over.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Faculty 18 Jan 2004
Format:DVD
Entertaining is the one word I would use for this film. Yes it's cheesy and the kind of story has been done so many times before but do we really care when we just want to curl up with a movie.
I never gets boring and it's not too gorey.

Just a bit of fun really.
