The rebranding of Factory Records re-issue label LTM as Factory Benelux has given not only given James Nice's imprint a new lease of life but also gives these re-releases an added authenticity.

I first came across the "Of Factory New York" phrase on the record label of New Order's "Confusion" 12" single and didn't know what it meant. Many Factory fans at the time would already have been aware of Factory's New York outlet through Joy Division's "Atmosphere" maxi-single and New Order's "1981-1982" mini-album, although I think in reality the US Factory label was more of a notional thing. And so it is that this compilation is not a retrospective of a label as such, rather a collection of tracks that were influenced by, recorded in or were themselves underground hits in the USA.

And a very strong selection it is too. A Certain Ratio's "Do the Du" is a winner every time and a great way to kick things off albeit perhaps not, to my mind, their most NY-influenced song. John Robie's remix of Cabaret Voltaire's "Yashar" - surprisingly the only record the Cabs went on to release on Factory, despite having featured on "A Factory Sample", is one of their best and not that easy to get hold of - so a welcome inclusion here. Section 25's "Looking From a Hilltop" is arguably the most under-rated piece of music ever: a pre-Acid House outing for the Roland TB303, showing just how far ahead of his time Bernard Sumner was as a producer, although I prefer the original to the megamix myself. 52nd Street's "Cool as Ice" is one of those tracks you don't know that you already know (well, if you were a fan of obscure 80s Indie music that is).

a charity compilation for Of Factory New York
the only problem is the best tracks here
are already available on Fac Dance
good sleeve notes that only show what is still missing
including nothing by ESG, although they are not on
any of the other recent Factory compilations?
