Book Description

16 Oct 2008

The Broons and Oor Wullie have appeared in the Sunday Post in Scotland since the 1930s and still have a huge following today, with the annual selling over 100,000 copies every year.

This is a slip-cased facsimile of the first ever Broons and Oor Wullie annuals. Collecting together the first few years of publication, the annual shows the stylistic development of the characters during this formative period of the classic cartoons’ lives.

Now over 70 years since their original publication, this brilliant two-in-one annual has saved a small piece of Scottish heritage from obscurity. Appealing to all generations who have read the strips, the book offers a great insight to the early days of the Broons and Oor Wullie, as well as fulfilling the promise of all annuals: to make you laugh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unedited - the way they should be. 4 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my wife who has been collecting Oor Wullie for years. This book is not intended to be politically correct and it was refreshing to see that it has been published in it's original form.

As my father was an exiled Scot, the Sunday Post was a weekly fixture in our house, and I grew up with Our Wullie as a childhood friend and the Broons as close neighbours. My auntie bought me the alternating albums every year (right up to my fiftieth birthday!!!), and I've continued buying myself after she passed away. The two never fail to delight, though I do prefer the older stories where Wullie was allowed to be more of a scamp, in scrapes that kids got into before Health & Safety took over, and pitting his wits in a generally friendly way against PC Murdoch. So I was delighted to find that facsimiles of the first annuals were available. Braw!
The Broons and Wullie are educational too - over the years I've learned far more about Burns, Hogmanay and Scotland through these pages than I'd ever have bothered with through dry books at the library. I've enriched my vocabulary by adding a few words and phrases, like Jings and Crivvens. I've found out about Black Bun, sugarelly water, and lots of other Scots delicacies. It's great to have two books that were there at the start of it all. Mind, I've still not found out what Help ma boab means!

5.0 out of 5 stars See where and how the legend began! 16 Oct 2010

When you consider an original annual in good condition would sell for thousands this is a rare opportunity to read this first collection. These are collected over the first few years of publication and it's fun to see how Oor Wullie develops both in shape and in character, ending up almost the same as we see him today.
