5.0 out of 5 stars Thrash-tastic, 21 Feb 2007
By Hedon (Eternal Night) - See all my reviews
It has been a very, very long time since an album has impressed me this much. Prosthetic records were right to snap up LTC as they may well have become one of metals leading lights had they not split.

LTC do play melodic death metal, but they're a far cry from the masses of At the Gates wannabes that seem to be eminating from every pour of America these days. Nor is there any hardcore or metalcore influence in them. Basically, they play a kinda crossover between classic Gothenburg sound and the more technical side the Bay Area thrashers of yesteryear (i.e. Dark Angel). Songs are well written with some great riffs, cool time changes, and just generally everything is bursting with emotion, passion and aggression. But its not noise for noise's sake. Its haunting beautiful and carefully crafted in a way that leaves most metal bands (or aggressive bands in general) light years behind. And whatever LTC may lack in terms of songwriting experience, they more then make up for with the intensity of their performance.

Imagine a combination of the best bits of mid 90's melodic death (At the Gates, Carcass) combined with the approach of modern bands like Black Dhalia Murder, mixed with the melody of classic Maiden/ Preist, a dose of technical thrash (Kreator, Dark Angel) and your getting there. its a great fusion of classic metal and modern styles into some serious shredding, screaming and riffing. Oh, and the female vocalist has to have one of the greatest voices in metal.

Every song is a pure blinder, but Exile, City of Snare and The Unwelcome Saviour stand out for me.

Light this City could eat the new generation of metalcore bands (as i lay dying, still remains etc) for breakfast and still have room for afters.

Seriously if you like Melodic Death or even aggressive music in general i cannot recommend this enough. the only fault in my eyes is the lack of solo's. but you can't have everything. if you're thinking about Facing the Thousand i'd also give their other album Remains of the Gods a gander. It's a bit more of a choatic and less-refined affair, but still great.

--UPDATE--

I've had this for over a year now, and while its still great i think its more like 4 stars then 5. i've gotten into a lot more death since then and realised that this album is still great but nots as great as i originally thought
