Product Description

Product Description

Every manager, every coach, every HR professional, every trainer, every team leader - anyone who needs to get the best out of a group needs to know how to facilitate. So what is facilitation and why is it so important?

To facilitate means to make something easy, so the challenge of facilitation is to make it easier for a group to learn, to develop and succeed. Facilitation bypasses coercion, teaching or chairing. It's about how to read a group, how to challenge group members appropriately and how to name the apparently unnameable. It's about being able to design events which perfectly match what the group needs and then to run such events with aplomb.

Facilitating Groups, in this new edition, is written by a facilitator with thirty years of experience and cuts to the heart of the practical skills that any facilitator needs.

This is the first time I've seen a book on facilitating, I've belonged to the European Facilitators User Group for a long time now, and really just relied on things picked up there, but this provides a great read and reference on the subject. It flows well, which makes it easy to read, but its layout also means its easy to dip into when there something specific you want help with. The one ommision I would have liked to have seen tackled is more visual material in the book - what things would look like on a flipchart or white board, or how the dynamics of a room of people works. Having said that, the book is digestable becuase it doesn't try to tackle everything.

Facilitation 27 Nov 2011
By Funk VINE™ VOICE

This is one of those niche books that you should read at least once in your lifetime. The author obviously knows her stuff and has plenty of experience within the field (a nice change). It revolves not around how to throw a meeting, or make people behave better, but rather how you as an induvidual can work with disparate parties to acheive a goal. The book walks through various real life anecdotes, coupled with professional experiences and the odd bit of science here and there.

For me it has helped me in how i run my meetings with regards to how i shape the interactions that people have within them. A good read, but more aimed towards those people who have regular meetings/interactions e.t.c with colleagues and other business partners, rather than tips for day to day managment.

Excellent 22 Jun 2011
By Mrs. Margaret Gallaghrt VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
As someone who runs sessions for carers and people with long term conditions, I found this book extremely helpful. The main aim for me with the work I do is to help people to recognise their own knowledge and abilities and build on them, while being part of a group information-sharing process. This book gives both the theory to the group empowerment process and the nuts and bolts of how to do it well, and consciously. Highly recommended.

Accessible But Light
The book is written in an accessible style but is too lightweight. It has some good common-sense advice but as I read I kept having the nagging thought that the book was more... Read more

Insightful, but somehow lacking
I thought this was a good book where understanding human behaviour was concerned, and yet, it was somehow lacking in method. Lots on theory, but very little on practice. Read more

solid book for faciliators
This book reminds me of the open university texts I used while studying for my MBA. The writing is good, solid, readable - but not overly inspiring. Read more

Good introduction to the subject
