Book Description

15 Jan 2009
Gritty. Gripping. Unforgettable. Martina's back. Just before Danny Cadogan's fourteenth birthday, his father leaves. Having drunkenly run up a gambling debt he cannot pay, Big Dan Cadogan takes the easy way out. Leaving behind his wife and children to face the wrath of the men sent to collect the debt. Determined to protect his mother, brother and sister, something changes in Danny and, overnight, he turns into a young man set on making his way in a violent and dangerous world. He becomes a Face. Not just a Face, but the most feared Face in the Smoke. Out for all he can get. At any cost. But Danny's ruthlessness on the streets of London doesn't stop at his front door. He rules his wife, Mary, and his children, with an iron will - and his fists. But if Mary breaks her silence, it could shake Danny's criminal empire; right to the very core. And for a Face at the top of his game, there's only one way to go. Down. Because, after all, debts can be paid without money. Set in the heart of London's criminal gangland, from the seventies right up to the present day, FACES is gritty, gripping and utterly unforgettable.

Review

'Cole is brilliant at portraying the good among the bad, and vice versa, so until the very end we never quite know who to trust. This is the very stuff that makes her so compelling' (Daily Mirror)

No one writes about East End women and their vagaries like Martina Cole (Maxim Jakubowski, Murder One)

'A powerful novel that pulls no punches... Cole has an ear for the vernacular of the East End, as well as an ability to portray the viciousness of life at the edge' the Guide ( Guide )

'Right from the start [Cole] has enjoyed unqualified approval for her distinctive and powerfully written fiction' (The Times)

Intensely readable (Guardian)

'Martina Cole explores the shady criminal underworld, a setting she is fast making her own' ( Sunday Express )

'Utterly compelling' ( Mirror )

'The story will grip you from the first pages' ( Best )

'Gritty novel from an author who knows intimately the world she writes about' ( Express ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Money for old rope 24 Oct 2007
Format:Hardcover
What an awful disappointment and a let down to her fans! I have read all of Martina's previous books and had been looking forward to reading this book for weeks. From the second chapter on I started to get more and more frustrated with the repetition, meaningless dialogue and feeble 'plot'. Every third or fourth sentence was a repeat of a previous one (with only the wording being rearranged) and made Martina appear as if she just couldn't be bothered with trying to come up with something different. The lack of substance to the book was insulting to the reader - it just seems to be money for old rope to me. Nothing like earlier books such as Ladykiller, Broken and Dangerous Lady which gripped the reader and made you feel you actually cared for the characters in the book. Pull your socks up Martina with Authors like Mark Billingham, Mo Hayder and the like you'll have to do better than this!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Hugely disappointing 19 Oct 2007
Format:Hardcover
I was eager to read this book having read everything Martina Cole has previously written and been unable to put down from opening at page 1. Faces is the most non-story I think I have ever read. It was repetitious to the point of being annoying and I only kept reading because I was hoping I could find a story which would explain the 500 odd pages of descriptive, repetitive text. What a huge disappointment this book was.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a shame...... 28 Oct 2007
By Whillow
Format:Hardcover
Pretty disappointing, I've read all of Martina Cole's previous books and she's written some brilliant, mesmerising stuff. This was just a churned out amalgamation of some of her other characters but without a storyline, like she'd written it in her sleep as the publication date was due. I have to admit it I got pretty sick of the constant mention of 'Danny Boy Cadogan' and'being a face' that I started to skim read just to get to the end. Please Martina, take some time out and get back to your best!!

1.0 out of 5 stars repetition repetition repetition 28 Oct 2007
Format:Hardcover
i rarely purchase hard backs but for Martina Cole i make an exception and bought her latest as soon as i saw it on the shelf... what an utter disappointment this book was with no real plot and no likeable or multifacted characters... edit out the repetitious text that made me want to scream and you may have had a reasonable short story ....Martina has let herself and her readers down with this deviation from her normal excellent writing

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring 21 Oct 2007
By Sammij
Format:Hardcover
I normally love Martina Cole's books but with this one found myself skipping pages ( & i never do that with books!)
I think the message was Danny was a 'Face' - never would have guessed, it was repeated on every other page.
I will wait for the next one & pray martina has gone back to the style of some of the earlier books - Two Women, Maura's Game, being excellent reads.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 14 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
As everyone, I am a huge Martina Cole fan and eagerly await each publication. I was so disappointed. I read the book over many days (which is unusal as I usually start and don't stop until I'm finished) and I was desperate to get to the end. I was so bored but continued with it waiting for the bolt of suprise and shock......but there wasn't one.

I think Martina has played out all scenarios from modern day underworld. I would like to see her go back in time - Goodnight Lady style.

I feel Faces was written very slap dash and repetative and I feel Martina didn't really get going with it. The publishers were wrong to go to print with this. It's not your right to have a book printed on the back of a reputation as a brilliant author. Each book must be merited on it's content.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awful 22 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
Please do not waste your money buying this book. If I could give it zero stars I certainly would have. It is repetitive drivel and I cannot understand how it made it to publication. Martina Cole should be embarrassed to have put her name to this book, given the excellent work she has produced in the past, and it is an insult to her fans. I only got as far as page p187 because I could not bear to read the words 'he was a Face' one more time. Judging by the comments on here, I didn't miss much!

1.0 out of 5 stars If only there was a zero star! 1 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
Being a huge fan of an author is not the same as being a huge fan of a football team, one would support them to the ends of the earth after performing badly. I began this book with great anticipation after enjoying everything else she had written. I am just over halfway through and felt I had to write a review in the hope that nobody else would waste their hard earned on this dross!!

I am, after 330 pages still searching for the plot..if i could be bothered I would count the sentences that have been repeated over and over and over but I'm sure I would lose the will to live after the first few hundred!

A huge testement to the absolute direness of this book is that I don't have a screaming hissy fit when my partner picks it up to go to the toilet..seems the best place for it.

Lastly, unlike my footie team my support of Martina Cole stops here, how dare she produce something like this after such great work in the past.
