A doctor takes us through his journey into the many "faces od death".

Mondo, shockumentary, mockumentary, call it what you want but 1979's Faces Of Death is probably one of the most famous types of this kind of picture. We start with the fake Dr Grosse talking direct to camera about his journey around the world seeing and dealing with the many types of death, it then changes into several clips of death/deaths. The clips are many and incredibly varied, from tribal, slaughterhouse, accidents to executions, the authenticity of the clips also wildly varies from the real- most of the accidents, the disasters and slaughterhouse, to the fake- the executions, animal attacks and beheading. Some of the clips are truly ridiculous, the spiritual rebirth at the end is pant-wettingly funny, as are the croc & bear attacks. The film does have a more than a few shocking scenes though, the dog fight at the beginning, the lady falling from the building, the body crushed under the lorry, autopsy scenes and the airline accidents with bodies lying everywhere will take a strong stomach to view. Even some of the fake scenes aren't an easy watch, the monkey brains, shooting of the family & the garrotting sequence's have been filmed well and had people fooled for years.

This is not a film for all tastes and viewer discretion is heavily advised, however if you can take it is an interesting watch, just don't take a lot of notice to what the good doctor says its mostly false and doesn't make a lot of sense- he said here in the country of Africa (obviously a lot of research went into this one). The film has been banned in many countries so it's unsurprising this made it onto the very first nasties list in 1983 and was successfully prosecuted more than once, but that's why I and many others have seen it.

Faces Of Death Blu Ray Review

Distributor : Gorgon Video, US.

Well what can I possibly say about this film that hasn't already been stated somewhere else?
Probably not very much, so I think I will just stick to the facts regarding the blu ray release.

This is the US blu ray release put out by Gorgon Video. First off, the disc is not region locked so great news for those who have to worry about these sort of things as it will play on any blu ray player worldwide.

The film is presented in a 1080p 1.85:1 Anamorphic transfer which looks unbelievably good for this type of documentary film. Some print damage remains throughout, however I got the impression that this is supposed to be present in certain scenes and is also present in the original elements of stock footage used in the film.

The blu ray master is taken from a Japanese theatre print so is a little different to the regular version people have grown up with. The print being from a Japanese source, contains a fogging effect to some shots of genitalia present throughout the film. This should come as no surprise, as the Japanese seem always to have a problem with this type of thing. In addition, a seen involving a prison inmate being executed in a gas chamber is not present in the film. Apparently the explanation for this, is that the particular scene was not present in the original theatrical versions and was later added into the home video prints. The scene in question is however presented on the disc as a deleted scene.

The audio on the disc has 5.1 and 2.0 English options. The sound does seem a little tinny in parts but again I'm sure it is how the film was originally made.

in the early 80's this was released as a video nasty and was banned in no time, and 20 years later with the launch of the dvd we are now smart enough to realise how lame it is.

I've seen the director on telly admit that 90% was fake and said how he did it. the gas chanber and electric chair executions were fake, and a basic knowledge about how executions are done will make you realise that. the girl jumping off a building is real but the fireman running up the stairs and a close up of the dead body is mocked up. the bear blatently has the roar dubbed over and its from a circus, if it was real they would at least let you see it strike. try adn get into the mind of a camera man that sees the sorts of thing in this dvd, you just would not respond the way these camera men do.

just bad picture quality when it is the real thing. I would say there are nealy 3 real human deaths in this one. the only time when you see detail and it is most definetly real is when they are killing an animal.

This DVD is may things. Offensive to some reviewers, disturbingly amusing to others, but react as you will, the fact here is that it totally delivers on its promises, and as groundbreaking as it is, it will never be forgotten, and I doubt it could be outdone even by todays standards. The film is a shady compilation of butchered footage and faked material, and honestly, don't you just want to wet your shorts laughing at the ham acting of the dubiously named Francis B. Gross. But still, I can't help loving it. It's a classic.

If you're into cringing, and you're not afraid or unsettled by facing the touchy and unrelenting topic of death, then I'd recommend you at least experience this film. Remind yourself you're dead meat. I can't think of a better way to "waste your life"... can you?
