5.0 out of 5 stars Just face it 6 Oct 2006
Format:DVD
This DVD is may things. Offensive to some reviewers, disturbingly amusing to others, but react as you will, the fact here is that it totally delivers on its promises, and as groundbreaking as it is, it will never be forgotten, and I doubt it could be outdone even by todays standards. The film is a shady compilation of butchered footage and faked material, and honestly, don't you just want to wet your shorts laughing at the ham acting of the dubiously named Francis B. Gross. But still, I can't help loving it. It's a classic.

If you're into cringing, and you're not afraid or unsettled by facing the touchy and unrelenting topic of death, then I'd recommend you at least experience this film. Remind yourself you're dead meat. I can't think of a better way to "waste your life"... can you?

Faces of Death is infamous and has been only released in the UK previously cut by about 30 minutes. Here, it is missing only two scenes, and only one is obviously cut. This is a magnificent release of the cult classic that is Faces of Death.
But, the film itself? Well, it starts off bloody, becomes disgusting and then deteriorates near the end when it starts making points about society. The worst parts of the film are the scenes of animal slaughter, few of which are cut because they are all set in slaughterhouses or such places. Cows and sheep have their throats slit, a cow is punctured with a spear and then skinned, a chicken has its head cut off and it runs round the yard headless and a monkey is blowdarted, only to be cooked on an open fire. Face scenes involve a monkey having its head carved open (partially cut), a guy having his head chopped off, numerous autopsies, two executions, numerous shots of dead bodies, and unrealistic alligator, bear and terrorist attacks. However, while it is disgusting in parts, Faces of Death is also very powerful and it remains compulsive viewing throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a documentary, not snuff. 21 Sep 2008
Format:DVD
This movie is so misunderstood. In my opinion it's appeal was never meant to be simply a collection of gore clips to get drunk watch with your mates with. This is a documentary. That means there are real clips that may be disturbing but they are accompanied by narration which discusses various aspects of death in an interesting and philosophical way.
Another thing that seems misunderstood is the validity of some of the clips. People say "oh as if that's real". Again it seemed to me that some of the clips were never meant to be passed off as real. It's not about grossing people out, it's about opening peoples eyes and minds. But some things the man witnessed were not caught on camera, and so have been reconstructed "crimewatch" style so the narrator could show what he'd seen.
