John Gregson made a pretty fair policeman in many a supporting film role. In this leading role, however, he stumbles. Actually, if he stumbled a bit more - for most of the film his character is blind - he would have been more convincing in the part. But it would be unfair to attribute all or even most of the shortcomings of this film to Gregson. The main problem is the poor plotting. There is a twist, which I will not reveal, and we must not get to it too quickly, the director and scenario writer agree, so the story chugs along for what seems an eternity and.... nothing happens. Of course, we the viewer, have seen the 'twist' coming long before this and must wait, and wait, for the story to catch up with us. Then there is a burst of action and a not too unsatisfactory conclusion. By this time we are merely observers of the clean-up, the party has long since finished for us, and with it any enjoyment. Mai Zetterling is a fine actress who does her best to sell a silly story. No wonder she decided she wanted to direct her own film after this.
