5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the cover price 29 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Crime anthologies are an established feature on the literary landscape. But "Face Off" to the best of my knowledge is unique. It pairs in one volume 23 crime writers in 11 stories featuring their series characters. So, for example, Lee Child's Jack Reacher bumps into Joseph Finder's Nick Heller in a Boston bar; Linwood Barclay's Glen Garber goes along for the ride of a lifetime with Raymond Khoury's Sean Reilly; and John Sandford's Lucas Davenport travels to Manhatten to team up with Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme in the hunt for a serial killer.

It is an intriguing concept which works well. And I was introduced to a couple of authors I have not heard of before leaving me wanting to read more. Some stories work better than others (a matter of personal taste of course) but they are all good.

If you like crime thrillers and short stories you should like this volume. I certainly did. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the book 23 April 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Overall, I enjoyed the book; some tales better than others but no real clangers. I was attracted by the Reacher story and it was short but sweet.

It's designed as an intro to other 'famous characters' in the hope they interest you enough to buy the individual authors book.

But as a stand-alone read, it's fine. Maybe wait for an offer price if you are unsure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set of short stories 10 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this and the concept. A number of the contributors are on my regular reading list bit I also got introduced to a number of new characters who I'll now have to check out.
Just thinking wouldn't it be great to have the likes of Clive Cussler, Scott Mariani and Chris Kuzneski and others contribute
in the next... Just an idea

4.0 out of 5 stars A good set of short stories. 6 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Really enjoyed it. Some were by writers of characters I had read before, but others I had not read their work, so I will try their books. It is a way of checking out via short stories. And it is unique to have a book of different stories by two writers merging their own characters together. Try it.

5.0 out of 5 stars love this concept 28 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first time I've read a book like this with authors combining to write short stories. As well as intriguing it gave me a taster of some different characters making me now more likely to read some of the books by authors other than the ones I usually read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice mix of your favourite characters 11 Aug. 2015

Really enjoyed this book. The blend of different characters was a refreshing change. My only complaint is that they were only short stories - though that could just be me being greedy

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing 17 Feb. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Some of the stories were good but some poor, I guess that is natural. Had to skip a couple. It may be better to buy the actual novels these guys write rather than this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant idea. 21 July 2014
By Liz Wilkins TOP 500 REVIEWER
Thank you to all concerned for the review copy.

I’ve had this book for a while, and I have been savouring it by reading one of the stories every now and then instead of in one big chunk – now I’ve finally completed the lot and boy was that a brilliant brilliant reading experience.

For a start some of my favourite characters are in here meeting some of my other favourite characters – I mean really, could it get any better? Then admittedly there are some characters in here whose books I have not read, which gave the whole thing a magnificent twist for me and oh boy has my” to be read” list just exploded again. So the answer to my previous question is no, it could not have been any better.

I really don’t know where to start to be honest – there is so much to love here and so many different aspects to it that its hard for me to pin down any one thing to talk about. I can’t even pick a favourite story – although it has to be said when Jack Reacher (Lee Child) faced off against Nick Heller (Joseph Finder) my heart was jumping - because they are all so magnificently done. Then you have F Paul Wilson’s Repairman Jack alongside Heather Graham’s Michael Quinn which was terrific and the battle of the legal eagles when Paul Madriani (Steve Martini) met Alexandra Cooper (Linda Fairstein) and right there I would have been completely satisfied. But there’s more….

Harry Bosh is around, Rebus, Grace, Warren, Rhyme and Davenport (not necessarily together, hey lets not give everything away!) all mashed up in an unprecedented and superb collection of short stories that has something for everyone. Each one well plotted, intelligent and intriguing, there was not a single story, even when it included unknown people, that I didnt adore.
