Product Description
Suzie Gray is only fifteen when she is stabbed to death within metres of her uncle's yacht on the Isle of Wight. Her body is found in the blood-smeared arms of Olly Matken, a family friend who grew up with her. Schizophrenic and vulnerable, he presents a serious challenge to the police. 'I didn't hurt her!' Olly protests. 'All I did was keep her from the devil.' DCI Charlie Trench turns to forensic psychologist Karen Taylor. She knows she should ignore his call, but she cannot. His own psychologist doesn't think so, but his father does. The only way to find the truth is to identify Olly's devil. And Karen has demons of her own.

An interesting mystery, and a deeply fascinating psychological insight into family relationships.

Face of the Devil covers ten days. Set mainly on the Isle of Wight where Suzie Gray is killed - just fifteen years old, and stabbed to death within a short distance of her uncle's yacht.
With a young man with known psychological problems found at the scene of the crime DCI Trench calls on forensic psychologist Karen Taylor to talk to Olly. But all Olly will say is `I was keeping her from the devil'. But if Olly did stab Suzie, where is the murder weapon?
Karen is disturbed by the attitude of Olly's own father who seems to just want his son locked up. Karen has her own demons, in a relationship with Will, a brain surgeon she is still attracted to the moody DCI Charlie Trench. On the face of it Will is the better bet and everything he does, says is that he is the right man - so why don't I like him, why I am looking for him to make a mistake so I can say - ha! Yes, I knew it. Maybe it's just me 'because on the face of it Will is an all round good guy.
As Christmas approaches Karen's life is complicated by calls from her mother asking when her brother Aiden is arriving from the USA. Aiden has agreed to go halves with Karen on the development of her old family holiday home. As Karen seeks to find a way to reach Olly and find out who did kill Suzie she makes a break through within her own life which points her in the right direction.
A probing psychological book that reaches out to the reader on two levels, that of an interesting mystery, and a deeply fascinating psychological insight into family relationships.
Highly recommended.

When Suzie Gray is found dead in the arms of schizophrenic Olly Matken most people on the Isle of Wight think the nature of the crime is clear. Only Karen Taylor, a forensic pyschologist, is disturbed by the easy answer and seeks to delve deeper into what the real story might be.
N.J. Cooper writes intelligent crime fiction which is well-written, intricately plotted, and well-realised in terms of characterisation. The third in the series (following No Escape and Lifeblood), this picks up on the complications of Karen's life, not least her vacillating relationships with Will, her neurosurgeon boyfriend, and DCI Charlie Trench, dark, brooding and sexy.
Cooper is an accomplished author who writes nicely complex stories that feel grounded in reality. Set between Southampton and the Isle of Wight, this eschews the slasher/serial killer type plot for something that is psychologically-probing and compelling - more Elizabeth George than Karen Slaughter.
