This volume of Buddy's adventures sees him "designing" his own car, travelling to the tragic 1955 Le Mans, and having many more adventures at and away from the circuits. The usual light humorous tone is present, although the descriptions of the Le Mans disaster are powerful and moving.
The Buddy Palumbo at the end of this volume is very different to the naive eighteen year old at the start of The Last Open Road. And that's a key part of the charm of Levy's books - his characters really do mature and change as you spend time with them.
These are quite simply the best works of fiction set in and around motor racing that I've ever come across - sheer paradise for anyone with an interest in racing, and (I would guess) highly readable for anyone else.
I hope there are many more volumes of Buddy's adventures. After all, he'd be about the right age to own a Can-Am team in the mid-sixties. Are you listening, Mr Levy? ;)
What supprised me the most was reading about some of the folks who Buddy meets along his adventures and thinking "Hey, I know/knew those folks, too." It certainly made the book more interesting for me.
The only down side was, since I had a preview edition, there were enough typos to be distracting. Shouldn't be an issue as the final version is supposed to be out.
Burt does get extra credit for having the advertising section in the middle of the book. It's a great idea.
