4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, frothy and surprisingly fabulous advice, 17 Dec 2002
There's some etiquette advice that a modern girl just can't get from her mother. Is it socially acceptable to sleep with the boss? When can you leave one of your best friends off the invitation list for a shopping trip? How can you politely stop colleagues from interrupting you while you're eating your lunch? Is your cute male friend Bingo a Chapstick?

Despite some dubious tips on occasion (using different font sizes and colours on your CV will probably make it the first in line for the shredder - but maybe this isn't the case in Canada, where the authors are from), this frothy book is actually full of useful hints on how to handle difficult situations with grace and aplomb. Reading like Breakfast at Tiffany's meets Miss Manners, by way of Sex and the City, this is a bright and witty book that knows it's as shallow as all get out, but is all the better for it. The authors' main point is that simply by exercising a little charm and courtesy, you can make life a lot more pleasant for yourself and for others. I felt infinitely more fabulous after reading it and even navigated central London at rush hour with a smile, letting other people's rudeness pass me by rather than wind me up. Act like a Fabulous Girl from time to time and not only will you be top of everyone's Christmas card list, but you'll also be far less stressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars well-written aid for modern living, 14 Jan 2003
By Caroline (UK) - See all my reviews

This book is for any young woman with delusions of Holly Golightly. It tells you how to be somewhere between Charlotte and Carrie on Sex and the City, how to be fun without losing your manners. It is not a stuffy guide to decorum, it is supremely practical and deals with tips for every budget and for every crisis. If you are a fabulous girl or know one, buy this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading before attempting to use the Tube, 15 May 2002
By A Customer
This book could equally well be entitled "How to be Carrie Bradshaw". The ethos, syntax and grammar borrows heavily from Sex and the City. It's peppered with reference to popular culture (shoes are 'Manolos') and the whole book feels curiously mid-Atlantic.

It does what it claims to do quite well, however, and anything that encourages a better-mannered society has to be a good thing. It's not a stuffy book about the finer points of etiquette, it's more a reminder that treating people with courtesy and respect makes you feel better and can take you far. Although much of the advice seems obvious at the age of 25, it would have been useful to know at 18. And I still know a lot of 25 year olds who would be better people for a quick read-through!

Some of the chapters fall a bit flat, for example the one on keeping house, which is so basic it could be lifted straight from a fresher's guide to living away from home. I also found the chapters on relationships quite patronising and very American.

One thing I had a particular problem - would a truly decorous girl really have a "F*** Buddy?"

All in all, despite the froth, it must have sunk in because I let a lot more people out in front of me driving to work this morning and I've been smiling at people like a Miss World contestant all day! The world would undoubtedly be a more pleasant place if this book became a bestseller. Fabulous girls of the world unite - we have nothing to lose but our nail extensions!
